According to the origin lore, the roots of the Memphis-Misraim Egyptian Masonry Rites can be traced to the legendary Menes - Founder king of the First Dynasty of Egypt - who is said to have been a son of the biblical Noah, son of Ham. As a tribal chieftain, he united Upper & Lower Egypt, establishing an illustrious kingdom that had a profound influence on all aspects of human civilization & culture. He built the Capital at the southern end of the Nile’s fertile Delta, which later became known as Memphis. In Hebrew the name of King Menes was called ‘Misraim’ – which was his title of Initiation into the Mysteries of Isis-Osiris - which he established from the secrets that originated in ancient Atlantis. At the ‘Turning Point of Time’ the term Misraim became the occult Mystery name of Egypt itself.
At the beginning of the Christian era, Ormus, an Egyptian Priest of Isis, who had been converted to Christianity by St. Mark, is said to have worked with the Apostle whose symbol was the Lion, to combine the Power & Wisdom of the Egyptian Mysteries with The Love & Freedom of the new Christ Impulse. The Misraim Dienst = Initiatory Mystery Service, inaugurated by Rudolf Steiner is a continuation, in a renewed form, of what was founded in ancient Egypt – which is appropriate & much needed now, since in our time of the 5th Cultural Epoch of the ‘Consciousness Soul Age’, we are called to recapitulate the 3rd Egyptian Cultural Epoch on a Higher Level. The foundation of the New Mysteries as expressed thru the Spiritual Science of Rudolf Steiner, transformed the ancient initiatory streams, uniting them with a conscious responsibility to what is needed in our present age.
Early in the history of Anthroposophy, which is in itself a renewal of Rosicrucianism, when Steiner first began working with Marie von Sivers, as General Secretary of the German Section for the Theosophical Society, as well as ‘Arch Warden of the Esoteric Section’, they joined “in a purely formal way”, the “Order of Ancient Freemasons of the Memphis-Misraim Rite” – with the purpose of taking up the continuum of this tradition to reform the future with the creation of the ‘Mystica Aeterna’ – which was Steiner’s ritual initiative - part of the ‘Cognitive-Ritual Section, of his Esoteric Class’- practicing the “Misraim Dienst” Steiner’s completely independent group, Mystica Aeterna was made up of people who longed to work in a moral hygienic way with a ‘Western Esotericism’ - rescued from the darkening twilight of materialism - made accessible to the modern artistic, scientific, & ethical life of the soul. Grounded in the ancient Rites & legends, the Spiritual content Steiner brought, provided a Sacramental Renewal for the purpose of enacting the practical Christic task in the development of the highest evolution of humanity. In a lecture given at the founding of the Ritual Order, Steiner said: “Just as it is true that everything of real importance in the past stems from the ‘Royal Art’, so it is also true that everything of real importance in the future, will derive from the further cultivation of this same source.”

The renewal of Freemasonry & Rosicrucianism, was developed out of Steiner’s own karmic connection with the Spiritual Founders of this impulse, including, namely, Christian Rosenkreutz. And yes, it’s true that when the great war broke out Steiner dissolved the group that had come together under the name Mystica Aeterna. This had to be done since the world was completely changed by that war, which became the precursor of every war since.
But then - after the war - in 1922 - Steiner again renewed the Misraim Dienst – Which is ever evolving & growing, just as humanity & the Universe are ever changing. There are Lodges enacting the Misraim Service all over Europe. And a small but growing group of us here have founded the Grand Lodge of the United States - The Mysteria Mystica Americana. Our modest Temple space is located in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, but we have folks from every region - We are the North American Representative of the International Misraim Alliance - a Ritual Order transmitting the Rosicrucian-Initiatic system of Rudolf Steiner. As MA we conduct Experiential Rites in Sacred Community, to gain the Truth of Wisdom, the Piety of Beauty, & the Virtue of Strength - We strive to manifest the higher “I” in Selfless Service - Bringing the Esoteric Knowledge of Spiritual Science into Ritual Gesture - engaging Art, Science & Spiritualty. Practicing the ‘Misraim Dienst’ as given by Rudolf Steiner, MA offers a modern path of Initiation into the New Rosicrucian Mysteries, where the human being becomes the Temple.
