Developing God’s Standard

August 21, 2026
by Timothy Burt
,

Does it ever feel like the standard of this world is being lowered more and more? And if we’re honest, has that shifting standard ever influenced our own thinking, speech, or behavior in a negative way?

When we come to Christ, we don’t instantly think, speak, or act like Jesus. We are born again in our spirit, but our minds, habits, attitudes, and words are still being transformed. That’s why the Christian life is one of continual growth.

Many new believers come from backgrounds where profanity, coarse humor, anger, gossip, sexual immorality, or worldly thinking were simply part of everyday life. They were routine in my life, that's for sure!

It's easy to be unaware that there is a higher standard until you begin spending time in God’s Word. When someone surrenders their life to Christ and begins reading the Bible, the Holy Spirit lovingly begins speaking to and shaping that surrendered heart.  What once seemed normal no longer feels right. Their desires begin to change. Their speech changes. Their priorities change. Their character changes. This is the beautiful work and transformation of the Holy Spirit working in the life of a surrendered heart to God.

God has never called His children to blend into the world. He has called us to shine within it. Jesus said: “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14,16 NIV)  So that you may become that light, God speaks to your heart through His Word and begins raising your standards so that you may ever-increasingly mirror His!

The purpose of developing a godly standard isn’t to earn God’s acceptance. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we are already accepted, loved, forgiven, and made His children Nor is it about becoming self-righteous or looking down on others. Rather, it is about allowing Christ to be seen in us. The Apostle Peter reminds us: “But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” (1 Peter 1:15-16 NIV)

Holiness isn’t merely avoiding sin. It is becoming more like Jesus in our attitudes, our speech, our mindsets, our relationships, and our conduct. Every day, the Holy Spirit is teaching us to love what God loves and to turn away from what diminishes His work in our lives. And the word of God is the revealer of His words and ways.

This transformation doesn’t happen accidentally. It happens as we consistently spend time with the Lord. His Word renews our thinking. Prayer softens our hearts. Worship lifts our eyes above the world’s values. Fellowship with other believers strengthens our resolve. Little by little, God’s standard becomes our standard.

Paul wrote: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2 NIV)

The world constantly presses its values upon us. If we neglect God’s Word, it won’t take long before our thinking begins to drift and our standards begin to erode. But when we remain close to Christ, He continually shapes us into people whose lives reflect His love, truth, grace, purity, kindness, patience, and self-control.

The greatest testimony we have is not simply what we say—it is the life we live. A believer whose speech, attitudes, integrity, and love reflect Jesus becomes a living testimony that Christ truly changes lives. I've been radically changed and am still changing! How about you?

Ask yourself today: Am I allowing the world to shape my attitudes and standards, or am I allowing God’s Word to transform me into the person He has called me to be?

Philippians 2:14–16 NIV “Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, ‘children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.’ Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life.”

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me just as I am, but also for loving me too much to leave me unchanged. Continue Your work of transforming my heart through Your Word and by Your Holy Spirit. Help me to develop the character, speech, attitudes, and conduct that honor You. Let my life shine with the love of Jesus so that others will see Him in me. Keep me from drifting toward the world’s standards, and instead help me to grow into the likeness of Christ each day. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Don't Be Caught Off Guard

August 19, 2026
by Timothy Burt

I woke up suddenly. Something didn't seem right. The bedroom seemed brighter than it should have been. I looked at the clock. 7:00 a.m. My heart sank. My alarm should have gone off an hour earlier. I reached over and discovered the problem immediately—I had forgotten to turn it on.

Then I noticed something else. Renee was gone. She had left early that morning to visit one of our sons and his family. I wasn't able to go with her, but I had planned to wake up, pray with her, hug her, and kiss her goodbye before she left. She had gotten up at 5:00 a.m., but I was sleeping so soundly that she decided not to wake me. She thought I needed the rest. As grateful as I was for her thoughtfulness, I felt an unexpected emptiness. She was already gone, and I had missed the opportunity to tell her goodbye. I had been caught off guard.

That feeling reminded me of another day years earlier. Late one night, my dad called. My mom had suffered a massive heart attack. The ambulance was on its way, and he asked if I would come get him so we could go to the hospital together. Within moments, Renee and I were in the car. Mom never regained consciousness. Two days later she stepped into eternity. I never got to tell her one last time how much I loved her. Once again, I had been caught off guard.

Another memory came rushing back. Years ago, during my airline career, I was aboard a commercial flight that came dangerously close to colliding with another jet. It was a genuine near miss. For a few moments, I thought my life might be over. God graciously spared us, but the experience left a lasting mark on me. I realized just how quickly life can change—and how suddenly eternity can come. I had been caught off guard.

Not long ago I learned that a dear friend I hadn't seen in more than twenty years had been killed in a motorcycle accident. He was a wonderful man, and I couldn't stop thinking about his wife, his family, and everyone who loved him. None of them expected that phone call that day. They, too, were caught off guard.

Life has a way of reminding us that tomorrow is never guaranteed. A missed goodbye. An unexpected phone call. A tragic accident. A life-changing moment. None of us knows when one ordinary day will suddenly become extraordinary.

The greatest surprise of all, however, will not be an accident or a phone call. It will be the return of Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself said that no one knows the day or the hour. One day, without warning, the trumpet will sound. In the blink of an eye, every believer in Christ will be caught up to meet the Lord.

The Apostle Paul wrote: "For the Lord Himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever. So encourage each other with these words."1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 (NLT)

Notice Paul's final words: "Encourage each other with these words." The return of Christ isn't meant to frighten those who know Him. It's meant to fill them with hope. But there is another side to that hope. For those who have never surrendered their lives to Jesus Christ, His return will come completely unexpectedly. They will be caught off guard.

God doesn't want that for anyone. He has done everything necessary so that every person can be ready. Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins, rose again from the dead, and now offers forgiveness and eternal life to everyone who will repent of their sin and place their faith in Him. The question isn't whether Jesus will return. The question is whether you'll be ready when He does.

If you've never received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, don't put it off another day. Turn to Him today. Ask Him to forgive your sins, take control of your life, and make you His own. There is no greater decision you will ever make. Don't let eternity catch you off guard.

Romans 13:12 (NLT) "The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living..."

Closing Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us enough to warn us and prepare us for eternity. Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, to die for our sins and rise again so that we can have forgiveness, peace with You, and the promise of everlasting life. Help us to live each day with hearts that are ready to meet You—not in fear, but in joyful anticipation. Keep us walking closely with You, growing in faith, obeying Your Word, and sharing the hope of Christ with those around us. And for anyone reading this today who has never surrendered their life to Jesus, draw them to Yourself. May today be the day they repent, place their trust in Christ, and begin a brand-new life as Your beloved child. We thank You that whenever that glorious day comes, we can lift our heads with confidence, knowing that our redemption is drawing near. In Jesus' mighty name, amen.
