The Critical Need to Remember

October 14, 2026
by Timothy Burt

There is something deeply revealing about how God chose to communicate truth to His people. He didn’t only give commands—He gave stories, parables, and what the psalmist calls “hidden things, things from of old.” These were not hidden to keep people in the dark, but in the sense that they must be sought with a seeking heart, reflected on, and understood with the heart.

Psalm 78:2, 7–8 NIV.  “I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter hidden things, things from of old… Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget His deeds but would keep His commands. They would not be like their ancestors—a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to Him.”

God’s purpose has always been the same—that His people would trust Him, remember Him, and walk in obedience to Him. But this is where the quiet danger lies for every believer. We don’t drift away from God suddenly. It happens subtly. We stop remembering what He has done. We stop reflecting on His faithfulness. And when memory fades, trust weakens. When trust weakens, obedience becomes inconsistent. Before long, we begin living more by our feelings, fears, and circumstances than by faith.

That’s exactly what happened to the generation the psalmist warns about. They had seen miracles. They had experienced provision. They had witnessed God’s power—and yet they forgot. That is still the danger today—not ignorance, but forgetfulness. You may know Scripture. You may have seen God answer prayers. You may have experienced His provision. But if you don’t intentionally remember those things, your heart can slowly forget and grow distant without you realizing it.

That’s why God gave us His Word—not just to inform us, but to anchor us. It reminds you of who He is, what He has done, and realigns your heart when it begins to drift. It renews your trust when life feels uncertain.

One of the simplest ways to guard your heart from this drift is to build a small, consistent routine—especially at the start of your day. Not something complicated, but something intentional that anchors your heart before the day begins to pull at your attention. Begin your day with one portion of Scripture—not just to read, but to receive. Don’t rush through chapters. Read until something stands out, and then stop there. Let it speak to you. Think about it. Write the verse(s) down. Carry it with you in your pocket or on your phone. This is how God begins shaping your thinking before the world does.

Then take a moment to remember what God spoke to you and has done for you. Recall one answered prayer, one time He provided, or one situation He brought you through. When you intentionally remember His faithfulness, it strengthens your trust for today. Faith grows when memory is exercised.

And then give your day to Him in prayer—but don’t rush past worship. Begin by acknowledging who He is. Thank Him. Praise Him. Tell Him you trust Him. Then bring your needs, your decisions, and your concerns before Him. Worship softens your heart and lifts your eyes off your circumstances and back onto Him.

These simple practices, done consistently, build a life that remembers God instead of forgetting Him. And that’s the difference. Because remembering God isn’t automatic—it’s intentional. And when you live this way, your trust will grow, your heart will stay loyal, and your spirit will remain faithful to Him.

Psalm 105:5 NIV “Remember the wonders He has done, His miracles, and the judgments He pronounced.”

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to be a person who remembers. When life gets busy or difficult, don’t let me drift into forgetfulness. Remind me of Your faithfulness, Your provision, and Your goodness in my life. Strengthen my trust in You and keep my heart loyal and my spirit faithful. Teach me to walk in obedience, not out of duty, but out of love and confidence in who You are. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
