God, Our Refuge

“God, you’re such a safe and powerful place to find refuge! You’re a proven help in time of trouble—more than enough and always available whenever I need you.” Psalm 46:1 TPT

Have you ever had one of those mornings when your day seems to get off to a bad start almost before you’ve had a chance to get out the door? I think most of us have. Sometimes it’s self-inflicted. You forgot to set the alarm and wake up late. Maybe you get to work only to discover someone didn’t show up and suddenly their responsibilities have been dumped on you. Or you’re already running late when you notice the gas gauge is on empty. Maybe it’s a grumpy spouse, an unhappy child, a frustrating phone call, or one of a thousand other things that can get a day headed in the wrong direction.

We’ve all experienced days like that. But here’s what I’ve learned: a bad start doesn’t have to become a bad day. The enemy of our soul would love to convince us otherwise. Satan loves to take one frustrating moment and magnify it. Before long, our imagination starts predicting everything that’s going to go wrong next. This day is going to be terrible. Nothing is going right. Things are only getting worse. Satan is an exaggerator to say the least! He’d love to turn one difficult morning into fearful imaginations about your entire day, and eventually your life.

That’s why it’s so beautiful and calming to stop and remember who God is to us. He is our God. He is our Savior. He is our Father and friend. And He is our refuge.  A refuge is a safe place you run to when something feels threatening or overwhelming. And when you feel your day beginning to unravel, I’d encourage you to do exactly that. At your first opportunity, pause. Step away for just a minute if you can. Maybe it’s a bathroom, your car, an office, or anywhere you can get alone with God for a moment. Then simply talk to Him from your heart.

Tell Him what’s happening. Tell Him how you’re feeling. Ask Him to help you, settle your heart, straighten out your thinking, and give you wisdom. It doesn’t have to be a long prayer. Sometimes a few sincere minutes with God can change the direction of your thoughts—and consequently, the direction of your entire day. Let's be reminded of God's instructions to us in those moments. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God… And the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6–7 NIV

I love that promise because sometimes our circumstances haven’t changed at all when we finish praying—but we have. We’ve taken our fears and burdens to our refuge, and God’s peace begins to replace the anxiety that was trying to take over.

God can be your refuge when your thoughts are racing. He can be your refuge when you’re worried about something you can’t control. He can be your refuge when you’re hurting, when you don’t know what to do, or even when the problem was created by a mistake you made. Don’t run away from God because you’re disappointed with yourself. Run to Him. And sometimes God is simply our refuge because we’re tired and need His presence to restore our perspective.

There’s something else about Psalm 46:1 that I absolutely love. It calls God “a proven help in time of trouble.” Proven! If you’ve walked with God for any length of time, you have your own history with Him. You’ve seen prayers answered. You’ve experienced His provision. You’ve received wisdom. You’ve watched Him open doors. And you’ve survived difficult seasons that once made you wonder how you’d ever get through them.

Sometimes when today’s circumstances are shouting at you, you need to remember yesterday’s faithfulness. God helped me then, and He will help me now. So the next time your morning gets off to a terrible start, don’t surrender the rest of your day to it. Don’t let Satan turn one frustrating circumstance into an imaginary prediction of what’s coming next. At your first opportunity, step away, quiet your heart, and talk to God. Run to your refuge and, “Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge.” Psalm 62:8 NIV

Prayer: Father, thank You for being my refuge. When circumstances begin to overwhelm me, help me remember to pause and run to You instead of allowing worry and fearful imaginations to take over. Thank You for Your proven faithfulness throughout my life. Help me trust You with whatever I’m facing today, knowing You are always available and always there to help me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
