In our modern culture, vultures are considered disgusting & ugly – predators, or creepy diviners of death. But in the ancient Egypto-Chaldean epoch, they were seen as servants of the gods – By devouring the corpse, they transform what is rotting - expediting the transition of the soul into the afterlife. The crown of many an Egyptian Queen was bedecked with the wide span of the Griffon or vulture as part of her headdress - signifying her divine consecration as servant to the Goddess of Eternal Life – for this Promethean Condor was concerned sacred – honored as a “Compassionate Purifier“ –
Here in the Heartland, we have many magnificent Turkey Vultures – their huge wing spans cast vast shadows – gilding above the farms & fields to display their scavenging circling signal.
How can we invoke the positive attributes of the Mytho-poetic Archetype of the Divine Scavenger in our time now? Perhaps one way is to see what is rotting as an alchemical necessity - a servant of Transformation – in a Manichaean gesture… & if we were to meditate on Death – not as the end of physical life - but as a metaphor for shedding what is outworn – from the Latin vellere “to pluck out” - In that light, what death would serve the gods? What will you choose to offer to the “Compassionate Purifier”? ~hag
