I send greetings from Dublin on this Ascension Thursday, as I prepare to embark on a sacred tour with Pleroma to reclaim the Hibernian Mysteries of Ireland The Spring-Tide is rising here on the Emerald Isle - divulging the juicy essence of Spirit.
& so it is that every year, when the Earth breathes out in the Springtime, the mystery of the Ascension of Christ, Who is the Spirit of the Earth, is renewed. Yes, the 3-fold Festival of Easter-Tide flows on, it goes further – 40 days after the Mysteries of Death & Resurrection, we receive the 2nd aspect – a new archetype expanding the human soul thru the Festival of Ascension - There is an esoteric significance to the 40 days – 1st of all, the symbolism of the # 40, which BTW: is mentioned 149 times in the Bible, is important to contemplate, it represents an initiation process, some sort of trial, a period of testing - an opportunity for advancement - which we must endure, to achieve the triumph of our Spirit Self– And so for 40 days after the Resurrection, amidst this seasonal activity, the disciples received from The Risen Christ his most esoteric teachings - essentially the contents of the ‘The 5th Gospel’ by Rudolf Steiner - preparing them to become Apostles - with Mary Magdalene as the ‘Apostle to the apostles’.
They beheld the vivid spiritual reality of what would have happened to earth existence if the Death & Resurrection of the Christos - the willing sacrifice of the Being of Love, had not occurred: It was revealed to them that the human physical body would have become so deteriorated that the whole of humanity would have perished!
Then they witnessed The Christ, being received into the clouds…Rising up…out of their sight - an expansion of His being - like the unfolding of a flower into the universe.
Christ is now the bridge connecting us to the Father God - Because of the Ascension, we can tap into the Godhead - able to receive the forces of the Cosmos into Earth-existence, giving us the vitaity to contine to unfold our highest evolution.
And as a result of these occult conversations with The Risen Christ over the 40 days, the disciples were able to receive the primal sources of a new imaginative clairvoyance -Removing the veil hiding the ‘true image of death = as transformation’ - which is in reality, a facet of the Father-God in its aspect of “Creator” - not the false face of anti-life which is so prevalent today - but the natural course of transformation: ‘What is born must die - but thru Christ, death becomes life’. This revelation brings the true content of death as a temporal maya, in its connection to the Kingdom of the Divine Father, into perspective. At the moment of the Ascension the true meaning of death was made manifest to the disciples, they beheld it with their own eyes to be a process of union with the world of the Divine - The truth that when we die in the physical world we are born into the Spiritual World, became clear.
Due to the nature of the ‘Moveable Feast’ aspect of Easter-Tide, the dates may change, but Ascension is always on a Thursday – Thor’s day – representing the planet Jupiter, the archetype of wisdom & expansion – model of the Beneficent Ruler, an impulse we can tune into, & help manifest in our world.
& then 10 days later - The 3rd phase of Easter-Tide, brings us to ‘Whitsun’ = White Sunday, or Pentecost = 50 days - When the Divine Feminine aspect of the Trinity descends with healing in Her wings - to empower us - with tongues of fire - for the achievement of our highest individual destiny.
Ascension comes as the blossoming world is unfolding into fullness. Trees, plants, flowers, touched by the warmth & light from above – are stirring upwards - Embodying Heaven’s vestments of color & fragrance. The whole of Nature reaches upward towards the heights. And it is in this mood every year at the time of the Ascension of Christ, that Nature celebrates the ascension of the Soul of the Earth - an expansive outbreath after the contraction of Winter’s seeming death. The longing of the human soul strives also upward, in unison with Nature, seeking the touch of World-Warmth. This mood of Ascension attunes all life to the Cosmic expanses. From this point of view, Ascension can be called the ‘Festival of the Elementals; as well as The Festival of the Hierarchies’ = The 9 Choirs of Angelic Beings working from the Planets & the Zodiac. “My head bears the being of the resting stars. My breast harbors the life of the wandering stars. My body lives and moves amid the elements. This am I.”~Rudolf Steiner
This reconnection between Heaven & Earth was prefigured in the story of Jacob’s ladder from the Old Testament. Thru his dream of the ‘Stairway to Heaven’, Jacob gave us the prophecy of the Ascension in the picture of a golden ladder on which choirs of Angels, as well as our unborn descendants, & our beloved dead traverse between the Worlds. The Christ impulse dwells in the Earth, AND extends into the Divine Presence of the Trinity, to fulfill the prophecy of Jacobs ladder, so that humankind is brought near again to the Cosmos.
And what is important to recognize is that, as the Christ has ascended, so too, in the fullness of time will humanity be transfigured. We came from Spirit into matter; & from matter we will once again become wholly Spirit. The company of the Hierarchies wait for us, their younger siblings to ascend, 1st in our thinking, to meet them in Fellowship, as they work all the while at our sides. Clues of their ever present help is everywhere, especially evident thru the Festival life.
Friends, the 2nd Christ-Revelation, this ‘coming in the clouds’ - which Rudolf Steiner spoke about as taking hold starting in 1933 - is here! The Nazi’s were able to keep this revelation veiled for a time, but they can not stop it! - The fulfillment of the secret promise of the Ascension is the 2nd Coming. It was said to the apostles, “He will come again, in like manner, as you have seen Him go, up into the clouds of heaven.” The ‘2nd Coming’ will not be in a physical body this time, but as a vital force in the aura of the Earth - which embraces us all. The Ascension is the seed of this 2nd Coming; & the 2nd Coming is the fulfillment of the Ascension.
Besides Jacobs ladder, another prefiguring of this apperance of the Etheric-Christ is shown in Paul’s conversion on the road to Damascus. Steiner tells us that people who can live into the event of the Ascension in their soul, can have their own Damascus experience - That starting in the 20th century, human beings are able for the 1st time, to experience this Christ-event Spiritually, as St. Paul did. Before that, only the Priestess/King Initiates, or pure-hearted peasant folk, like the simple Shepherds, were able to have such experiences.
We also experience the Ascension outpictured in the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - And the connection with the 2nd Coming of Christ in the etheric, is also made manifest thru the many Marian Apparitions.
The poet Novalis touched on the occult truth of the connection of the Ascension & the 2nd Coming in his poem: “In heavy clouds let Him ascend, And so also let Him downward tread. In cooling streams let Him be sent, In flames of fire blaze His descent, In air & essence, sound & dew - To permeate our whole earth thru”
Here we see the connection with: ‘As above so below’. The realm of the clouds, is where the Elements meet – a mix of air & water - particles of earth - warmth rising up into the etheric realm - where formative forces seed the Vital Life Body - which borders the material world. Entering that realm moves us into the etheric aura of Mother Earth - The Spiritual Threshold we all pass thru at birth, & after death. We can tune into this realm of vital forces - to recognize the 2nd Coming – inviting a new vitality into our life body, the etheric dwelling place of our Thinking Heart.
