In a collection of questions about the world, attributed to Aristotle, aptly named ‘Problemata’, there is a passage hypothesizing that if we could descend down into a very deep well during the day & look up, we would see the Stars – that the narrow walls of the well, would block-out the surrounding daylight - the light that conceals by its brilliance - so that it would be possible to regard the ever-present stars. This axiom became a metaphor for the alchemy of inner development - a way to experience what is normally hidden in the heights – known only thru a descend into the depths.
Goethe demonstrated that the deeper we go in our observation - the higher we ascend into the Wisdom hidden in All things. . So what am I observing? What am I plunging my attention & intention into? – What wisdom am I gaining? What knowledge - not just a selfish curiosity - or blind duty - but real interest - mindfulness that blossoms into love – Love given in Freedom.
To Know - is to Love. Whether its growing food, applying physics, studying philosophy, or practicing the arts – to Know is to be in relationship. To Know, & to be Known. To know in Truth - breeds Love – What do I love? What would I know? What wants to be known?
When I recognize the Love that moves the Sun & Stars - I experience that nothing real can separate me from this Love - for I feel its sacred waves in everything – So now I will dig wells - & Speak to the Stars – & as the Samaritan woman, go to the well - to receive the living waters. Going deeper is going higher - Going higher is going deeper. ~hag
