I grew up in the 1970’s when the veneer of what was shown to us - the shabby façade of capitalism - was peeling away from the reality of what was really going on in world affairs. The idealism of the 60’s had been co-opted by druggy illusions - breeding new levels of propaganda & police-state crowd control. After Watergate the media was homogenized - & true journalism slowly died – ‘experts’ in ‘modern science’ were bought & sold - & lies became truth - & so, here we are…post plandemic…
Working with the Spiritual Science of Anthroposophia demands that I ask questions, striving to see the ‘Above & Below’ not only in the world, but in myself. My research & experience shows me that what appears as physical phenomenon - something known thru the senses - is often a subjective maya. Seeing doesn’t necessarily lead to believing – without asking what is behind what we are seeing..?
And so, I have been asking: What is behind the recent mass sightings of the Aurora Borealis – referred to as the Northern Lights – which are now appearing much further South than ever before? Why? What is causing this world phenomena? I get that the popular narrative only wants us to revel in the beauty of the sky-show, without question. But when I’ve mentioned that I had an uneasy feeling with all the hoopla lacking any discernment around the spiritual causes - a young person called me a ‘hater’ – a taunting culture-canceling label that shames & shuts down all thinking – well, needless to say, I took it to heart - & thought to share with you some research from Rudolf Steiner, an initiate of the Science of the Spirit.
If you are interested in Occult Science at all, you may want to read the entire lecture that Steiner gave to the workers - which is really a dialogue based on questions that they had - choosing the topics themselves. They were always encouraged to share their thoughts, & to voice their objections. I will just outline the bits specific to the Northern Lights, but again the full context is always helpful, if you care to take the time to make the many connections behind physical sense impressions. (please note: the achieve translation in the links are slightly different than the one I share below from the book) How Spirit Works in Nature ~Rudolf Steiner, GA 351, 13 October 1923, Dornach The human being and the Earth in the North and South “So we can say: In hot areas, water melts; warmth, the warmth of the Sun dissolves everything. When the sun is less active, when the Sun’s power diminishes or is weak throughout the year, as in northern areas, the Moon becomes all the more powerful. When the direct rays of the Sun are not effective, these powerful rays of the Sun, which are reflected by the Moon, are more active. These, produce crystal forms which are very beautiful. We can therefore say: If we have the earth here (see drawing), then we have the hot zone there. The Sun’s rays have a particular effect on the hot zone. These sunbeams stimulate liver activity. The liver sends bile everywhere, and the bile spreads throughout the body. And when the bile spreads into the feathers of birds or the wings of hummingbirds, for example, it becomes the beautiful colors. That is why hummingbirds glisten in the hot zone because their bile is secreted very quickly and goes into the feathers very quickly. In cold regions, this does not happen, because the Sun has little power there. Instead, the reflected Sunlight, the light of the Moon, is particularly active, and this light causes the snow to form crystals. This only happens here when the Sun loses its power in winter. But in the regions of eternal ice, at the North Pole or on the high mountains, because the Sun also has no power there, because the Sun can only develop power in the dense air, these beautiful forms of ice are formed. We already get a wonderful impression when we look into nature in this way! We get the impression that wherever the Sun shines, life appears, life that melts and evaporates, life that spreads. Wherever the moon has an effect, a hardening occurs, shapes and images arise. That is quite an impression that one gets there. And one can only understand these things if one is open to spiritual influences. It is really true that one must say: in the lungs, where the human being actually produces mucus, the powers of the Moon are also at work. And they work in such a way that they do not get direct Sunlight, but use reflected Sunlight. Therefore, when the Lunar forces are predominantly active here in the north, and the Sun is inactive, something else happens: the air above becomes such that something that is always in the earth here comes out. For magnetism and electricity are everywhere in the earth. The earth is full of magnetism and electricity. You can see that magnetism and electricity are everywhere in the earth. And like a telegraph it has to be a closed current. If you run a wire from the apparatus into the ground and put a copper plate in there, and then put another plate there; you can then remove the wire, because there is a connection. Why? Because the earth itself has electricity and the electricity is conducted from one plate to the other. The earth replaces the wire with its own substance. The earth is full of electricity. But when the Sun shines on the earth, as at the equator, in the hot area, this electricity, when it wants to come out into the air, is immediately ameliorated. The sunlight is a force that extinguishes the electricity – brings a healing influence to the forces that can so disrupt the human organism. But where the Sun’s effect is weak, electricity goes up into the air, and you can see it above the earth. You see, the northern lights are the electrical force of the earth, which flows under the influence of the Moon’s forces. That is why the northern lights are very rare in our regions; they are frequent only in the northern regions. This is another point where science reaches a dead end at a certain point. Of course, science today knows that the earth is full of electricity. This science also always looks at the northern lights. But if you read in the books what this northern light actually is, the public is led to belive that it is something that flows from the Sun into the earth. But that is nonsense, it does not flow in, but flows straight out of the earth it self! What science does with the northern lights is so interesting because it is the same as when someone confuses their debts with their capital. That is the case. It makes a difference in human life when you confuse your debts with your wealth. But science can do it with impunity, it can look at the aurora borealis as something that flows in, while in reality the aurora borealis is something that flows out from what is happening in earth. The Sun balances it in most of the world. It is only in the northern regions that the imbalance is allowed to flow giving the colored lights. In the temperate areas, it is immediately received by Sunlight, and there it is brought into balance. In the northern regions, the Moonlight is more active when it shines; and when it does not shine, it remains active in the after-effect, and there the northern light, the outgoing electricity, becomes visible. Now, this northern light is particularly strong in the Northern regions because the Moon’s hardening forces are particularly strong. But there is actually a little northern light everywhere, only it cannot be seen because it is weak. In our regions, the aurora borealis, that is, the escaping electricity, is also weak. But in wireless telegraphy it is so strong that it has an effect. What works in wireless telegraphy is the same as what you see glowing in the aurora borealis. There you have the reason. Electricity, together with Moonlight, makes the snow crystals. You have to study the northern lights and the Moonlight if you want to study the ice crystals. Because the power of the Sun is less in winter, the power of the Moon gets the upper hand and the electricity is less extinguished, but the snow can make up for it by forming into such beautiful crystals. It is the Moon and electricity together that form the beautiful crystals and cause the frost flowers, as well as the Northen lights…”
And so, after we take in this spiritual scientific information, we can further ask: Why are the Moon forces, & electricity so powerful these days? The Moon forces have a hardening effect on the human organism – which has its place - but why are the Sun forces not able to bring a life-giving balance in the temperate zones as they have in the past? Steiner refers to electricity as sub-nature “…Electricity, for instance, must be recognised in its true character—in its peculiar power of leading down from Nature to Sub-nature. The human being must out of themself beware, lest they slide downward with it. The technical processes, caused humanity to stare more and more one-sidedly at the mechanical-material, which became the modern scientific realm. In this mechanical-material domain, all the Divine-Spiritual Being connected with the origin of human evolution, is completely absent. The purely Ahrimanic dominates this sphere.
(I see the adversarial forces of Ahriman embodied in the focus on extreme materialism (including AI) with a disconnect from Nature, & a denial of the “unseen” or Spiritual forces behind Nature. Ahriman is the hardener, the animalistic dog-eat-dog mentality that rules thru fear.)
In the Science of the Spirit, we can now create another sphere in which there is no Ahrimanic element. It is just by receiving in Knowledge this spirituality to which the Ahrimanic powers have no access, that man is strengthened to confront Ahriman within the world.
Further Leading Thoughts: 183. In the age of modern science, since about the middle of the nineteenth century, the activities of humankind are gradually sliding downward, not only into the lowest regions of Nature, but even beneath Nature. Technical Science and Industry become Sub-Nature. 184. This makes it urgent for humanity to find in conscious experience a knowledge of the Spirit, wherein we will rise as high above Nature as in the sub-realms the technical activities sinks beneath - thus creating within, the inner strength not to go under. 185. A past conception of Nature still bore within it the Spirit with which the source of all human evolution is connected. By degrees, this Spirit vanished altogether from man’s theory of Nature. The purely Ahrimanic spirit has entered in its place, and passed from theory of Nature into the technical slavery of humankind.”
These anti-Sun forces of sub-nature: electricity, magnetism, nuclear power, 5G… - seek to negate – to ‘block out’ the life-giving qualities of the Christ-Sun – giving us instead a flashy sky-show - another false-light distraction. So while we can enjoy the spectacle of the colors – which Steiner calls the ‘sacrifice of light’ – we can also seek to fire up the heart-Sun within our humanness - to look behind the spectacle - to find Christ in the Etheric - & to shine the Christ-light out - one-to-another – as we steward the Earth together - to become the new Sun – ~hag
