The Autumning Sun, cutting fierce across the vapors in angles oblique – like the Sword of Michael leading the charge – a clarion call to take action. But I was still not yet ready to climb out on the limb of my family tree – So, following the ‘this way & that way’ directions, from the villager - like the finger of god -
We ambled in search of the Madonna Grotto
There were other Chapels - one to St. Anna her mother - But the Black Madonna that I remembered from the story of then, remained elusive -Yet ever present – a potent imprint - like a tattoo on my soul –
Instead, we came upon the local Cemetery.
Hills exhale - Puddles sparkle - moss gleams next to the marble tombstones – Ever pronouncing revenant superlatives – I pay homage to my Italian ancestors –
Beseeching forgiveness –
Finding joy - my prayers light-up the firmament, beyond the mountain mausoleums, like a match – sparking a compelling portent of grace received & bestowed.
OK, now. I was ready to go see my family - in the person of Adelacina – Is she my 2nd cousin – I’m not sure – I knock on the wooden door of her piazza-facing stone/stucco-house - & there she is standing at the threshold, her head tilted, making a question mark of her sweet face - squinting at the conundrum that is me – I tell her who I am - who my father was – O tears of joy – She repeats his name – we fall into whole-hearted hugs embracing many generations. She pulls us inside, turns off the blaring game show on the little tv, & gets out the photo albums -
The story’s pour out as each yellowed scotch-taped page turns.
Making her voice gruff, she imitates my Strega Nona bossing everyone, complaining about the expresso, yelling at my Grandfather to ‘Shut up’. O she was a handful. We are laughing.
When a signed picture of Dustin Hoffman comes up, she gets all excited - As a surprise joke, her daughter, who works in the entertainment business, had the movie star call Adelacina on the phone. O the memories that make a life.
My face is starting to hurt from smiling so much, & I’m getting a low blood sugar headache. As if reading my metabolism - she pulls out cookies & asks if I want a shot of Limoncello. I dart CG a look, sharing the private running joke about how his mother, who is a lot like my Strega Nona in the way she can cut a person with her tongue – still rags on about how disgusting the Italian liqueur is, making a lemon sucking face - & how could anyone drink it, remembering when we were on a family vacation to Rome 20 years ago. I have been straight edge sober for going on 8 years, but I accepted the thimble of sweet zesty alcohol syrup – It went down smooth, & rose up like a hot-high - Curing my headache immediately.
The light was starting to fade & we wanted to be down the mountain before twilight, so we said our fare thee wells – Adelacina inviting us to come stay with her anytime – especially when the village goes all out to celebrate the Holy Feast Days.
Braving the narrow strait that was our tight birth canal upon arrival - we navigate our way back down - As I sense into what feels like a new incarnation – With so much to ponder – I wonder out loud – Yes, but where were all the goats? – my bell-necked nannies that slept with me on the side of the cliff on that 1st fate full visit.
Rounding a hair-pin - We heard them before we saw them – the tintinnabulation ringing out from the throats of the goats! – The perfect ending – & the 1st inkling of an inchoate beginning – My soul starts hiccupping - Am I willing to track the threads back across the loom…? ~hag
