The Determined Heart

September 3, 2025
by Timothy Burt

Daniel 1:8 TPT “However, Daniel determined in his heart not to contaminate himself with the food and wine from the royal table, so he begged the chief official to exempt him from the royal diet.”

Daniel was a young man who, along with three close friends, was taken captive to the foreign country of Babylon, where they were surrounded by pressure to conform to the conquering culture of their enemies. Daniel could not obey the request to eat foods contrary to what God wanted them to eat. It's there we read: Daniel 1:8 TPT “However, Daniel determined in his heart not to contaminate himself with the food and wine from the royal table, so he begged the chief official to exempt him from the royal diet.”

Those are powerful words we can and should learn from... "he determined in his heart not to defile himself."

Daniel knew that what he consumed—both physically and spiritually—would shape his life. He wanted more of God and nothing that would distract, dull, or contaminate his spirit, soul, or body.

This is where transformation begins. The Spirit of God nudges us toward choices that protect and strengthen our walk with Him. But at that very point, the enemy often launches his fiercest attacks.

The devil never applauds when you choose purity, prayer, or holiness. Instead, he paints a distorted picture of obedience:

  • “If you say no to this, your life will be empty.”
  • “If you make those choices, people will think you’re weird.”
  • “If you follow God this closely, you’ll miss out, be bored, and never be happy.”

But notice—the devil never paints the picture of blessing. He won’t show you the peace of a clean conscience, the joy of a close walk with God, or the fruit of a disciplined life. He only paints cliffs, dead ends, and loneliness—trying to convince you that saying yes to God means saying goodbye to joy.

God, on the other hand, always paints a better picture. He reminds us:

Jeremiah 29:11 (NLT) “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”  And even when we cannot yet see the outcome, His Word assures us that His plan is greater than we can imagine: 1 Corinthians 2:9 (NLT) “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him.”

The truth is, life with God is never boring. It is filled with purpose, influence, and eternal impact. Like Daniel, we are called to determine in our hearts to pursue what draws us closer to God and refuse what contaminates.

Every “no” to compromise creates space for a greater “yes” to God’s best. And each time we choose God’s way over the enemy’s lies, our mindset grows stronger, our witness shines brighter, and our future becomes more firmly rooted in His promises.

Psalms 119:112 (NLT) “I am determined to keep your decrees to the very end.”

In His love,
