Chapter 1. Air Trail Looking to put equanimity into practice? Try flying to Italy! One of the lessons of travel shows that, sure, I can meditate & study, research & write, all-the-live-long-day, but when push comes to shove, I am called to actualize the fact that it is my feeling-life which connects me with the world. How I behave is up to me – How I act or react colors reality, not only for my personal experience, but for those I interact with. A reminder to cultivate steadfastness: “so that no suffering crushes us, no experience drags us towards excessiveness or anger, that no expectation fills us with fear or anguish, that no situation causes us to lose our balance.” To stay grounded in the sacred - In the Practice of Inner Freedom - & in Social Coherence – this is the goal.
And so it is that I return again & again to the 6 Basic -Essential Exercises, the 7 conditions for Inner Development, & The Buddha’s 8-fold Path.Yes, they are ‘basic’, but not easy - extremely powerful - deeply human, providing strong social implications, especially when prioritized & practiced in Community. 1. The first exercise is Focusing Thought - the capacity for Concentration, & Objectivity. 2. Disciplining the Will, so that it becomes a true expression of Intention – Initiative in Action - Using Free-Will to align with Divine-Will. 3. Equanimity, & Composure - the capacity to remain Balanced & Calm, rather than reactive. 4. Positivity - the ability to tolerate anything – to understand every being – Impartiality -which Builds the Foundation of Trust for the Future. 5. Open-mindedness - an Open heart-Mind - overcomes the tendency to judge everything from the framework of sympathies or antipathies. The power not to oppose. 6. The 6th exercise is the Integration of all the previous five, which leads to a quality of Inner Harmony – to be able to practice Loving kindness out of real Freedom.
Because of flight delays & missed connections, our day in Bologna - la Grassa, la Dotta, la Rossa was cut short. But our evening stroll visiting open Basilica’s, hidden courtyards, historic porticoes, its leaning medieval towers, secret shrines, & bustling Piazza’s - was the perfect transition - setting the stage for the many gauntlets, crucibles, & Baptisms to come…so…
