“A person who looks out into space and sees a shooting-star should say to themself, with reverence for the gods: “That occurrence in the great expanse of space has its minute counterpart continuously in myself. Out there are the shooting-stars; while in every one of my blood-corpuscles iron is taking form: my life is full of shooting-stars, miniature shooting-stars.”
And this inner shower of shooting-stars, pointing to the life of the blood, is especially important at the end of Summer, when the sulphur-process is at its peak. This is when the human being is shining like a ‘glow-worm’ - and so it must be that its counter-force is present also - for millions of tiny meteors are scintillating inwardly in their blood. This is the connection between the inner human being and the universe. And then we can see how, especially when autumn is approaching, there is a great raying-out of sulphur from the nerve-system towards the brain. The whole human being can then be seen as a sulphur-illuminated phantom, a glow worm so to speak. But raying into this bluish-yellow sulphur atmosphere come the meteor swarms from the blood. That is the other phantom. While the sulphur-phantom rises in clouds from the lower part of the human being towards the head, the iron-forming process rays out from the head, and pours itself like a stream of meteors into the life of the blood…
We must say to ourselves: this sulfurous, Ahrimanic element storms through the human organism, stirring up our desire-nature and emotions. We feel it within us; we behold it at high summertime in the cosmic mist of desire above our heads. But we also behold how, into this over-arching cosmic mist, there shoot the iron arrows of the meteoric phenomena, cleansing and purifying it, acting as an opposite pole to the animal-like desire-nature. For through this shooting-in of the meteoric iron arrows from the cosmos, the mist above us—the animal desire of high summertime—is purified. And what takes place in majesty and grandeur out there in the great cosmos goes on continually also within us. We produce tiny iron particles in our blood, in combination with other substances; and while, on the one hand, there pulses through our blood the sulfurizing process, there works against it inwardly—meteorically, as the other pole—the iron inside us, bringing about the same process as is affected outside in the cosmos by the meteoric iron. In our relationship to the cosmos, therefore, we can picture the flashing meteoric element we find there as the counterpart of what within us is flashing forth—million-upon-million-fold—from iron in our blood. This frees us, cleansing and purifying us from the sulfurizing process that is also active in the blood itself…
Those impulses that are contained in the dispersed iron begin to have a special meaning for human beings: they are employed in the cosmos in the service of the Divine by a special Spiritual Being, whom we call the Michael-Spirit...The cosmic iron with its Spiritual efficacy makes it possible for the Michael-Spirit to mediate between the supersensible world and the sensory world of Earth. We must learn to make conscious use of the meteoric-force in our blood.
