The expression: The ‘Dog Days of Summer’, invokes for us an experience that many of us are having right now, & thru all of July & August, of the hottest time of year – Since ancient Egyptian times it has been associated with the heliacal (at sunrise) rising of the ‘Dog Star, Sirius’ – heralding the flooding of the River Nile. Sirius, is also connected to the Egyptian Goddess Isis, who searches for the Slain Sun-God Osiris when Sirius rises, causing the Nile to flood & become the fertile Delta. In the New Mysteries, we use the power of the Resurrected Sun, living now as the Christic Spirit of Earth, to re-member the slain Isis. Hear now the words of Rudolf Steiner from the ‘Gospel of St. John in Relation to the other Gospels’: “ My dear Friends: A special festival has long been celebrated on the 24th of June by a great number of those seeking higher wisdom. Going back to the time of pre-Christian culture, we find a similar June Festival coinciding with the time when the days are longest & the nights shortest, but in particular when the days start to become shorter again, when the Sun begins to lose some of its outer power, dispersing its heat for the ripening. As far back as ancient Persia, a festival of Baptism by Water & Fire was celebrated. In ancient Rome the Festival of Vesta was held as a baptism by fire. This late June festival was to the European forebears celebrated in honor of the God Baldur, one of the Aesir, son of the Odin & Frigg. Then the early Christian initiates began to sense a shift, & it gradually became the Festival of St. John the Baptist, the Forerunner of Christ on earth. A Festival in honor of the One who prepared the way for the most significant event in human evolution. A Festival to make straight the path, leading us to the deed of Christ. Its whole significance for the development of humankind, is revealed in the Gospel of St. John. Ever & anon we are told that there are those who know of such events in advance, & can foretell them. This implies that these events are not arbitrary, that they must unfold, & that some are called to work & prepare for them, in order that these deeds may come to pass. The last of the Hebrew Prophets, the Forerunner of the Anointed One, who has special spiritual gifts, who was able to see deep into the relationships within the evolution of humanity, proclaimed, & was able to clear the path for the Christ. Our present age, now, calls for a new revelation of this greatest event, & it is the aim of Anthroposophy, the new form of Rosicrucianism, to be this revelation. For this reason, it is fitting that today, when this message goes forth to a larger public, that the Rose Cross should again be its symbol. First let me characterize once more the basis of these Rosicrucian revelations concerning the life of Christ. The Rosicrucian’s are a ritual order that has fostered a genuinely spiritual Christianity since the 14th Century, & before that as a preparation through the ancient mysteries. This Rosicrucian Order, ignoring all outer historical forms, has endeavored to bring to light the deepest truths of Cosmic Christianity,The Rosicrucian order calls its members: “Christians of St. John.”It’s interesting to note that historically, many lodges working with Freemasonry celebrate two Feast Days of Saints who are both named John - the Feast of John the Baptist on 24 June - & the Feast of John the Evangelist on 27 December – both marking the time just after the Solstices, of Mid-Summer & Mid-Winter.Throughout human evolution, the Solstices have been honored as power points. Twice each year we move into a window within Space-Time when Sun & Earth communicate in their extremes. There is a Tipping Point in consciousness, working in service of our highest evolution that can be experienced, when we make it our intension to do so. These 2 individualities with the title John, holding the Sun/Earth Polar unity, are sometimes mysteriously depicted together in art by those who know the secrets of their esoteric connection. Some in the Rosicrucian tradition use the Feast Days of the two St. John’s for installing a New Grand Master, or for ceremonies involving the laying of a Foundation-stone.Interesting that Rudolf Steiner’s original name for the 1st Goetheanum was the Johannes Bau - John’s Building - the House of the Word. Although the Rosicrucian rites inaugurated by Rudolf Steiner in his Misraim Service, do share a similar structure to what is used by the Freemasons, the rituals, content, & work, are of a purely Rosicrucian nature out of Rudolf Steiner; who emphasized that what he was bringing was not Freemasonry as such. The name Johannes (pronounced E-O-AH-n-es) -E – O – Ah - is really a title – it represents a certain level of initiation devoted to developing what is beyond the little self - Living instead in the revelation of the Spirit.
