“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” Psalm 46:1 NLT
When someone makes a promise that matters, we naturally want to know whether we can trust it. We look for evidence. Has this person kept promises before? Have their words proven reliable? Will their actions support what they have said? We do this with people, contracts, and important decisions—but what about God's promises? When He tells us that He will be our refuge, strength, and ever-present help, can we trust Him? Has He given us evidence that His promises are true?
I was thinking about that as I read Psalm 46:1. God makes an incredible statement to us: “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.” Psalm 46:1 NLT. Think about what God is telling us. When trouble comes, He will be our refuge. He will be our strength. And He is always ready to help us. Those are powerful promises. But can we trust them? Has God proven Himself trustworthy? Absolutely!
The Bible is filled with evidence of God declaring things before they happened and then bringing them to pass. God Himself said, “I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come.” Isaiah 46:10 NIV. Throughout Scripture, God spoke prophetically about people, nations, events, and most importantly, the coming Messiah. These weren’t simply observations written after the fact. Biblical prophecy repeatedly points forward, and its fulfillment has given generations of believers powerful reasons for confidence in God’s Word.
There are people who have tried to calculate the mathematical probability of various biblical prophecies being fulfilled exactly as foretold. While particular calculations depend upon the assumptions being used, the larger point remains compelling: the Bible has an extraordinary prophetic record. God has repeatedly declared what He would do and then demonstrated His faithfulness in history.
But fulfilled prophecy isn’t the only evidence. God’s people have repeatedly watched Him make promises and then fulfill them. After Israel had experienced God’s faithfulness firsthand, Scripture records this remarkable conclusion: “Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.” Joshua 21:45 NIV I love that! Promise made. Promise tested. Promise fulfilled.
And that record didn’t stop with the people in the Bible. Every person who has walked closely with God for years begins accumulating his or her own history of God’s faithfulness. I certainly have. I’ve experienced answered prayers, God’s provision, His direction, His protection, His strength, and His help in situations where I didn’t know what to do. I’ve watched God make a way when I couldn’t see a way.
That doesn’t mean God has always answered every prayer exactly the way I expected or on my timetable. He hasn’t. Sometimes His help looked different from what I thought it would. But looking back over the years, I can see His hand again and again. And every experience of His faithfulness has helped build my confidence for the next time trouble comes.
That’s important because when you’re in the middle of trouble, emotions can become louder than your faith. Fear starts asking, “What’s going to happen?” Worry says, “How are you ever going to get through this?” The circumstances may even scream, “There is no way out!” That’s when you need to remember the evidence. God has a track record!
You don’t have to approach Psalm 46:1 as though an unknown person has just made you an incredible promise and you’re trying to decide whether you can trust him. God has been proving His faithfulness throughout history. His Word has stood the test of time. His promises have been fulfilled. His prophetic Word has come to pass. And if you’ve walked with Him for any length of time, you probably have your own testimony of His faithfulness.
So when trouble comes, don’t measure God’s promise by the size of your trouble. Measure your trouble by the proven faithfulness of the God and His perfect track record. God said He is your refuge. God said He is your strength. God said He is always ready to help you in times of trouble. And God’s Word gives us this wonderful conclusion: “For the word of the LORD is right and true; He is faithful in all He does.” Psalm 33:4 NIV
Prayer: Father, thank You that Your Word is true and that Your faithfulness has been demonstrated throughout history and throughout my life. When trouble comes, help me remember Your proven faithfulness rather than surrendering to fear. I choose to trust You as my refuge, my strength, and my ever-present help. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
