Following the occult law of a great initiate, Rudolf Steiner always waited for the question to come to him before offering an answer. Striving individuals who brought the seeds of an idea to the Good Doctor were given indications so that when the time was ripe, they could be planted, & nurtured into new impulses for the world. Steiner’s Agriculture Course came from burning questions such as: What can be done to check the increasing degeneration in seed-strains & in many cultivated plants. How can we improve the quality of nutrition? Others were concerned with the increase in disease seen the animal & human kingdoms, alomg with problems of sterility. Then there were more spiritual questions dealing with the etheric nature of plants, & formative forces in general. There was grave concern among the farmers beginning even 100 years ago, because of the rapid change in agricultural practices in the wake of the supply of cheap synthetic nitrogen-based fertilizer, flowing in from the adoption of the Haber-Bosch process - the ‘fixing’ of gaseous nitrogen which was first demonstrated in 1909 & which was then rapidly industrialized on a grand scale for explosives, & after WWI, for fertilizer. The Ag Course was presented over a 10 day period during the Whitsun-Tide of 1924, from 7–16 June, in the small village of Koberwitz, Silesia (now Kobierzyce, Poland). Count Carl von Keyserlingk, estate manager of 18,500 acres at Koberwitz, managed 18 farms, with more than 1000 workers, & the amazing Countess Joanna Keyserlingk, both Anthroposophist’s, hosted the course on their land. Ehrenfried Pfeiffer’s account relates that: “Count Keyserlingk set to work in dead earnest to persuade Dr. Steiner to give an agricultural course. As Dr. Steiner was already overwhelmed with work, tours & lectures, he put off his decision from week to week. The undaunted Count then dispatched his nephew to Dornach, with orders to camp on Dr. Steiner’s doorstep & refuse to leave without a definite commitment for the course. This was finally given.” Keyserlingk was described by Astrosopher Elisabeth Vreede, who was one of the 111 present, as: “one to whom farming itself was a priestly office” - “Count Keyserlingk realised the dire need for a complete revival of cultural methods”. Steiner stressed the importance of practical demonstrations: “As to your fellow farmers - well, if they hear of these things from you, at first they will say, “What a pity he has suddenly gone crazy!” ... But eventually when they see a really good result, they will not be able to reject it outright”. Rudolf Steiner stated that “the contents of this course is to serve, in the first place, as working material, the beginning of further research for the Agricultural Experimental Circle (AEC), who will enhance it and develop it by actual experiments and tests. The farmers’ society - the “Experimental Circle” that has been formed - will fix the point of time when in its judgment the tests and experiments are far enough advanced to allow these things to be published”. He stressed the importance of confidentiality at first because the $ driven interests of what we now know as ‘big Ag’ was just starting to put pressure on farmers to use their products. There were spies from the growing industry that wanted to buy up the rights to this new biodynamic impulse so that they could suppress it. And indeed, the Count was very much harassed by those whose interest was to discredit the new regenerative farming methods. Steiner was prophetic in much of what he taught. He presented the farm as “a living organism”. He spoke against a purely chemical reductionist view. Long before the costs of nitrogen pollution were monetized, Steiner, with great vison, put it in a nutshell: “There is a big difference between nitrogen and nitrogen”. He spoke of “the degradation of the products of agriculture” & observed that: “Nowadays people simply think that a certain amount of nitrogen is needed for plant growth, and they imagine it makes no difference how it’s prepared or where it comes from. Where it comes from, however, is not a matter of indifference.” Steiner urged the adoption of a holistic view - “the macrocosmic approach”- to “see individual plants as parts of a single whole.” He was critical of the approach where living things are “neatly pigeonholed into separate species & genera”, adding: “But that is not how things are in nature. In nature, and actually throughout the universe, everything is in mutual interaction with everything else.” “The most important thing is to make the benefits of our agricultural preparations available to the largest possible areas over the entire earth, so that the earth may be healed and the nutritive quality of its produce improved in every respect. That should be our first objective.” Here is a telling conversation Ehrenfried Pfeiffer had with Dr. Steiner en route from Stuttgart to Dornach shortly before the agricultural course was given: Dr. Steiner “had been speaking of the need for a deepening of esoteric life, and in this connection mentioned certain faults typically found in spiritual movements. I then asked, “How can it happen that the spiritual impulse, and especially the inner schooling, for which you are constantly providing stimulus and guidance bear so little fruit? Why do the people concerned give so little evidence of spiritual experience, in spite of all their efforts? Why, worst of all, is the will for action, for the carrying out of these spiritual impulses, so weak?” I was particularly anxious to get an answer to the question as to how one could build a bridge to active participation and the carrying out of spiritual intentions without being pulled off the right path by personal ambition, illusions and petty jealousies; for, these were the negative qualities Rudolf Steiner had named as the main inner hindrances. Then came the thought-provoking and surprising answer: “This is a problem of nutrition. Nutrition as it is to-day does not supply the strength necessary for manifesting the spirit in physical life. A bridge can no longer be built from thinking to will and action. Food plants no longer contain the forces people need for this.” A nutritional problem which, if solved, would enable the spirit to become manifest and realise itself in human beings! With this as a background, one can understand why Dr. Steiner said that “the benefits of the bio-dynamic compost preparations should be made available as quickly as possible to the largest possible areas of the entire earth, for the earth’s healing.” This puts the Koberwitz agricultural course in proper perspective as an introduction to understanding spiritual, cosmic forces and making them effective again in the plant world.” & so dear friends, where-ever you are, tune into the fact that 7 June 2026 is the 102nd anniversary of the Biodynamic Agriculture Course!
