One morning, while on a week’s vacation in Mexico with Renee, I got up early and walked down to sit by the ocean just before the sun came up. As I stared at the horizon waiting for the sun to rise, I was in awe of God’s creation. The stars disappearing, the sky lighting up, the colors of the horizon as the sun crept up. All of it more beautiful than words could say!
I’ve done this very thing over a hundred times over the years, yet the beauty of the ocean, the sky, the rolling waves at the shore, the moon quietly slipping away, and the seagulls scouring the seashore for their morning breakfast still feels like pure majesty. It never grows old.
Psalm 19:1 says, "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork."
Creation is constantly preaching. The sky proclaims. The waves testify. The sunrise announces His glory without ever saying a word.
As I worshiped the Lord there on the shoreline, a thought suddenly flashed through my mind. I began thinking about a couple of my own inventions from years past. Then, for whatever reason, I found myself thinking about Elon Musk and some of the massive, world-shaping things he has created. And then it hit me. How small. How limited. How temporary are the creations of men compared to the endless majesty of God and all His creation.
Psalm 33:6 — By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their host.
He didn’t assemble creation from pre-existing parts. He spoke it into existence. Every sunrise since the beginning of time has risen on schedule at His command. Every tide still answers to Him.
Job 38:8–11 — Who shut in the sea with doors and said, ‘Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed?’
The waves I was watching that morning only rolled as far as He allowed. I realized I could sit and watch sunrises every day from now until I go home to be with the Lord, and it would never exhaust the wonder of what He has made. The beauty is not random. It is intentional. It reflects His nature.
There is no one like our God. He not only created the stars — He names them. And somehow, in that same vastness, He knows us personally. That is what humbles me most. The God of all creation, who governs galaxies and mankind, loves you. Loves me. Personally. Intimately.
John 3:16 — For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
The One who set the boundaries for the oceans is the one who stretched out His hands on a cross. Magnifying the Lord daily reminds me of His greatness, His incomparable love, and His personal care for each of us. Worship shrinks pride and silences worry. It quiets comparison. It restores perspective. When we lift our eyes to Him, everything else finds its proper size.
Psalm 145:3 — Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable.
Prayer: Dear Lord, You are great and greatly to be praised. The heavens declare Your glory and the oceans testify to Your power. There is no one like You. You spoke the world into existence, and yet You love me personally. You govern the galaxies and still care for the details of my life. I worship You for Your majesty, Your holiness, and Your enduring love. Help me to magnify You daily and to live with awe in my heart for who You are. in Jesus’ name, Amen!
