He Gave It All—Did I?

May 27, 2026
by Timothy Burt

This morning in my quiet time, I was praying and talking with the Lord, and I found myself saying, “Lord, please help me to give my all to You.” And it was in that moment that the Lord gently reminded me of what that looked like for Him.

We often say, “I gave it my all.”

We say it after a long day. After helping someone. After pushing through something difficult. And in many cases, we truly mean it—we gave great effort. We tried hard. We didn’t quit.

But when I paused and reflected on what “giving it all” truly means, my mind didn’t go to me. It went to Jesus.

John 19:30 (NKJV) “So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, ‘It is finished!’ And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.”

Jesus didn’t just give effort. He gave everything.

He gave His time—to people who constantly interrupted Him, pulled on Him, and needed Him.

He gave His energy—even when He was weary, walking long distances, pouring Himself out again and again.

He gave His reputation—misunderstood, falsely accused, mocked, and rejected.

Matthew 8:20 (NKJV) “And Jesus said to him, ‘Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.’”

He gave His comfort—living without the basic securities most of us depend on.

He gave His will—surrendering completely to the Father.

Luke 22:42 (NKJV) “Saying, ‘Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.’”

He gave His body—beaten, scourged, nailed to a cross.

He gave His blood—poured out for our sins.

He gave His forgiveness—even in the middle of unimaginable pain.

Luke 23:34 (NKJV) “Then Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.’”

And ultimately, He gave His life—freely, willingly, completely.

That is what “all” looks like.

And when I see that, it doesn’t make me feel condemned—it humbles me. It resets my understanding. It lifts my vision.

Because maybe the goal isn’t to say, “I gave it my all,” as a declaration—but instead to pray, “Lord, help me to be more of You and less of me. Help me to give You more in the very moments I feel You leading me to respond.”

Jesus didn’t call us to match His sacrifice—but He did call us to follow His example.

To love more.

To forgive quicker.

To serve when it’s inconvenient.

To surrender when it costs something.

Romans 12:1 (NKJV) “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”

So the next time I’m tempted to say, “I gave it my all,” I want to pause—and remember what “all” really looks like.

Not to feel less… but to love more.

Not to strive harder… but to surrender deeper.

Because He gave it all for me.

And that truth calls me higher.

John 15:13 (NKJV) “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for giving everything for me—holding nothing back, loving me completely, and sacrificing Yourself so I could have life. Help me not to settle for comfortable effort, but to grow in surrender, love, and obedience. Teach me what it means to give more of myself each day—not out of pressure, but out of gratitude for all You’ve done. Shape my heart to reflect Yours. in Jesus’ name, Amen!
