I got a lot of yearning responses around the Pleroma trip to Ireland - Friends, I hear you about the timing & the money & the quick turn around…But I cannot let this opportunity pass - No matter how inconvenient & expensive it seems - I see this as a rare international opportunity to gather in a sacred, conscious way, with this amazing community - in a place where the forces ascending from the Earth thru the soil of the Emerald Isle work to enkindle the transformative qualities of what Steiner names as Gemüt = ‘the mind warmed by a loving heart & stimulated by the soul’s Imaginative power’ - Activating the soul forces of Inspiration & Intuition in each of our individual hearts – cultivating our karmic connections with each other - with the Geomancy - & the Hibernian Spirit of Place. I can already envision the gifts of our karmic group flowing out as renewed forces from our conscious circle thru Eurythmy, Speech, Art – Singing & Healing Ritual - cultivated by the New Mysteries which we will bring forth - to galvanize these ancient initiatory vortex sites. In the meantime, as I pack up my house of over 25 years, I plan to renew my research of Steiner’s insights on the Irish Mysteries, as I prepare for this initiatory journey. ~hag
Here’s my summary of - ‘Mystery Knowledge & Mystery Centers’ ~Rudolf Steiner, GA 232 - The Great Mysteries Of Hibernia, 7-9 December 1923, Dornach The Initiates of the Hibernian Mysteries were able to preserve the ancient wisdom of the Sun mysteries from Atlantis - retaining a high degree of clairvoyance - giving them practical insights into Cosmic & human existence - allowing them to approach the secrets of the ‘Cosmic Word or Logos’ - long after the other schools of initiation holding old forms degenerated. On the island which later endured so many sore trials, there was a Centre of the Great Mysteries, a centre of ‘Christian’ Mysteries before the Event of Golgotha—a Centre where the spiritual gaze of human beings living before the Christ Event, was directed in the right and true way towards it.
Thru the inner marriage of an initiatory experience with 2 symbolic polar effigies - In order that the Future of the Cosmos may be joined to the Past, the human being stands between the Past & the Future. All these experiences were then summarized by the Initiators - The first condition, when the pupil felt transported into the Cosmic All: You will learn in widths of Space, How in the blue of Ether-distances - World-Existence vanishes - And finds itself again in you. Then the feelings accompanying the condition brought about by the second effigy: In your inner Depths you shall unriddle - Out of burning-fevered Evil, How the Truth itself will enkindle - And through you the Being of Love shall live.
As this was being realized the words: SCIENCE & ART appeared in the place of the two statues. This sense of twofold union with the world was an experience which, accompanied by a feeling of inner triumph, came to the pupil as an echo of the experiences connected with the two statues. In this way they learned to expand their soul spiritually - on the one side into the Cosmos - & on the other, to penetrate deeply into a region of their inner being. The pupil learned to balance their intensity of inner impulses, with the intensity of external impulses. Learn to perceive in spirit - Winter-existence, And you shall behold - the pre-earthly life. - Learn to dream in spirit - Summer-existence, And you shall experience - The post-earthly life.
In Ireland - The Spirit of Place – overshadowing this Initiation - holding the purity of the Mystery teachings in respect to the whole historical setting of human evolution - its significance in the Cosmic evolutionary process - created something like a vision of the Christ-Sun - before the incarnation - This is what came to the pupil of the Hibernian Mysteries. At an advanced stage, when the pupil was transported, as it were, into the blue distances of the Ether, & when the Astral light streamed into them, the predominant experience was that they felt their own identity in existence with a great & mighty Cosmic World: I am living in an element together with other Spiritual Beings; this element is pure, innate Nature-goodness. For out of this planetary element in which I am swimming like a fish in water, although it consists of the volatile components of light, I feel comfort streaming into me from every side. The pupil felt the astral light pouring into them everywhere, forming & building them: ‘This Element is pure Nature-goodness, for everywhere it bestows something upon me. I am surrounded by pure Goodness. Goodness is everywhere, but it is a Nature-goodness that envelops me. This Nature-goodness is also creative, for its force enables me to exist, gives me my form, and sustains me, as I hover and move in this Element.’ And so, the impressions received by them through their initiation on the Emerald Isle, were those of innate, 'Nature-born morality’. A modern comparison for this experience might be expressed as follows: Suppose a person had a rose in front of them, & in breathing in its scent, were able to say with inner sincerity: ‘Divine goodness spread through the whole Earth-planet, is also streaming into this rose; and when the rose communicates its own essence to my organ of smell, I become aware of that Divine goodness.’ Anyone saying this honestly and sincerely today would be experiencing something like a faint shadow of what in those ancient times was felt inwardly as the very life-element of the individual human being. It will be clear to you that the Hibernian Mysteries belong to what Spiritual Science calls the ‘Great Mysteries’. For the Initiation achieved by the pupils gave them a vista of the pre-earthly, and the post-earthly life. Thus the pupil learnt to know the Microcosm, that is to say, themself as a being of spirit, soul and body in relation to the Macrocosm. But they also learnt to know how the Macrocosm itself evolves, how it arises, undergoes metamorphoses and ultimately passes away. The Hibernian Mysteries were verily the Great Mysteries. They were in their prime during the era preceding the Mystery of Golgotha. But the essential feature of the Great Mysteries was that in them the Christ of the Future was spoken of.
And when, after the first Initiation the image of Christ had been shown to the pupil as they left the Temple, the purpose was to bring home to them that fact that the whole evolutionary course of the Earth in Cosmic existence is orientated to the Event of Golgotha, which at that time lay in the future. And when eventually that Christ Mystery actually happened, when in Palestine those remarkable occurrences took place - at that very time - solemn Festivals were celebrated within the Hibernian Mysteries themselves. And what was actually happening in Palestine was revealed in to them in etheric pictures. On the island of Hibernia, the initiates experienced the Mystery of Golgotha in mystic etheric pictures, simultaneously - at the same time, that the historical event happened in Palestine. The initiates experienced the Mystery of Golgotha in the Spirit. And this was the basis of the greatness inherent in everything that subsequently went out from Hibernia into the rest of the civilized world.
And today, we look back at these things and find our gaze directed to the Hibernian Mysteries with an intensified activity of soul, for they are, fundamentally speaking, the last of the Great Mysteries, the last Great Mysteries through which the secrets of human and Cosmic life were revealed.They can be seen again today, in all their glory and majesty, by a soul sustained by inner freedom; for through true inner activity they can indeed be approached, and the menace of stupefaction overcome.The most beautiful and significant cairns to the primeval wisdom of humanity, to the grace of Divine-Spiritual Beings manifesting in the earliest stage of human life on Earth, the most beautiful tokens of that Age, are the pictures which can be revealed to us when we direct our spiritual gaze to the Mysteries of Hibernia.~Rudolf Steiner, The Great Mysteries of Hibernia, GA 232
