When Your Faith Becomes Intentional: An Inspirational Story

March 13, 2026
by Timothy Burt

Shanaya still remembered the moment clearly. She sat in her seat that Sunday morning as her pastor taught from the words of Jesus. It wasn’t loud or dramatic—just simple, steady truth. Then he read the verse slowly, letting it settle.

Matthew 5:16, NKJV “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

That morning, it felt personal. Not condemning. Not demanding. Just clarifying. She realized something quietly unsettling: her faith was real, but it wasn’t very visible. Not because she was ashamed. Not because she didn’t love Jesus. But because she had never thought through how to live her faith intentionally in everyday life—especially at work. She had always equated visibility with volume, and since she didn’t want to be pushy or awkward, she had chosen silence instead.

As she listened, a thought formed gently but clearly: What if shining didn’t mean preaching… but living on purpose?

Shanaya had never thought of herself as a covert Christian. She believed in Jesus. She loved Him. She prayed. She read her Bible. She went to church faithfully. But if someone at work had asked her what she believed, she wasn’t sure she would have known how to answer without feeling awkward. And so, for years, her faith stayed mostly private—not because she was ashamed, but because she didn’t know how to express it naturally. She was kind, dependable, and thoughtful, but she blended in. No one would have guessed that her life was quietly shaped by prayer and Scripture.

That Sunday marked a turning point.

Shanaya didn’t decide to start preaching. She simply decided to stop hiding. It began with small things. The way she spoke. The way she listened. The way she responded when others complained or gossiped. She chose her words carefully—not religious, not forced—just honest and gracious.  When stress filled the office, she remained calm. When mistakes were made, she extended mercy. When someone was struggling, she noticed.

One afternoon, while grabbing coffee in the break room, her coworker Leah lingered instead of rushing back to her desk. “You’re different,” Leah said, half-smiling. “I don’t know how to explain it.”

Shanaya felt that familiar hesitation rise up—but this time, she didn’t retreat. “I try to live my life guided by my faith,” she said simply.

Leah looked surprised, then curious. “Faith… like church faith?”  Shanaya nodded. “Yeah. Following Jesus.”

That conversation didn’t turn into a sermon. It didn’t need to. But from that day on, Leah started asking questions—small ones at first. Why Shanaya stayed hopeful. How she handled pressure. What gave her peace when life felt heavy.

Weeks later, Shanaya invited Leah to church. “I want you to know something,” Shanaya said gently. “At the end of the service, there’s usually an invitation for people to respond to Jesus—to give their lives to Him. I just wanted you to know ahead of time so it doesn’t feel strange.” Leah smiled. “Thanks for telling me. I appreciate that.”

Then Shanaya added, choosing her words carefully, “The Bible says that when we invite Jesus into our lives, His Holy Spirit comes to live within us and begins making us new from the inside out. It’s not about becoming perfect—it’s about a changed heart.”

That Sunday, Leah sat beside Shanaya in her seat as the service began. As the pastor taught from the Word of God, Shanaya quietly turned to the Scriptures and held her Bible so Leah could read along.

Leah was surprised—and a little unsettled—to realize that she knew almost nothing about the Bible at all. Yet instead of feeling embarrassed, she felt drawn in. She listened closely. She followed the verses. And when the invitation came at the end of the service, she wasn’t startled. She was ready.

Later that afternoon, Leah hugged Shanaya tightly. “Thank you for not pushing,” she said. “And thank you for not hiding.”

Shanaya smiled. She hadn’t changed who she was. She had simply let her light shine. And God did the rest.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 (NLT)“Whatever you do, do well. For when you go to the grave, there will be no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom.”
