Greetings friends on this Feast Day of Mary Magdalene - The name Miriam or Mary, which originates from the ancient Egyptian language; means “Beloved”. In Hebrew; it can also translate as “Rebellious”- this certainly applied to Miriam, the sister of Moses & Aaron, whose dancing & drumming helped to part the Red Sea. She later divined the waters up from the desert during the 40 years of wandering for the Hebrew people in their exodus from Egypt. The name Mary can also mean “Bitter”- full of sorrow. We can certainly see how this applies to Mother Mary. Bitter can also mean salty, like the ocean – the bitter Sea – The name Mary is often translated as a “drop of the sea” which brings up images of the Egyptian Goddess Isis searching in her boat, for her Beloved, the slain Sun-god Osiris. I see the name Mary as a title, a stage of initiation, like the name John. And Magdalene or Magdala, derived from the Hebrew word Migdalah means “Tower, magnificent, or great," so it’s like calling her "Mary the Great” To ascend the Tower - this is a symbol of initiation - an imagination of ‘far seeing’ – having vision in all directions. The essence of The Beloved Companion as The Tower, invites us to rise in our heart-thinking - to ascend - step by step into the inner worlds of initiation. When I first heard the word Migdalah, it made me think of the amygdala which is the part of the brain associated with emotions, & motivation – a complex structure of cells nestled in the middle of the brain, shaped like a vulva or an almond, which is where amygdala gets its name. It’s adjacent to the hippocampus, which is associated with memory formation. I love these connections. Migdalah, amygdala, Magdala. The eurythmy gesture for the letter M arises from the constellation of Aquarius, Bearer of Spirit Waters; these waters form the human being from etheric forces combined with the essence of Love – this brings warmth. I invite you make the eurythmy gesture for the letter M M is permeated with the Color Beings of Green: the balance of Nature in Spring. Blue: representing the contemplation of an enlightened mind. & Violet: The royal color of angelic presence. So when you make the gesture for M, you can visualize these colors streaming. To really understand the depth of Wisdom that resides in ‘The Tower’, perhaps you will meet Mary the Magdelene as a High Priestess of Isis – or hear her as the voice of the Divine Feminine power speaking forth from The ‘Pistis Sophia’, or ‘The Thunder Perfect Mind’ - stunning elegies, discovered among the gnostic manuscripts preserved in the desert at Nag Hammadi, in upper Egypt “Thunder Perfect Mind’ is a mythological poem narrated by a Divine Feminine Revealer whose Wisdom calls us to unite all opposites – in all aspects of human life. In the text of ‘the Dialogue of the Saviour’ we hear: "she mirrored the redeemer’s utterances as a woman who understood everything”. And my fav. the fascinating Pistis Sophia, which means the Wisdom of Faith - a Gnostic text that relates the teachings of the Risen Christ after the Resurrection to his disciples, including Mother Mary, Mary Magdalene, the Other Mary-his sister, & Martha. It contains the mythos of: The creation, the fall, & the restoration of The Sophia – we can also see it as an allegory of an initiation of Jesus; & the Human soul's journey to the ‘Light of the Heights’. And yes, these Divine Feminine streams had to go underground for a time - but dear friends, the tide is turning. You & I are proof of that; we are tuned in because we know the eternal wellspring is rising up, again. The Angel has come to Bethesda fountain – the waters are churning - Healing is bubbling up, waiting to be poured into the Holy Grail. Waiting for us to take up the Quest; to become, like the Magdala before us, The Bearer of the Chalice. All these gifts reside in the Tower of our 7 chakras, which we can purify & transform into spiritual organs, when we ‘cast out the 7 demons’, to reclaim our uprightness, to stand in our higher “I”. & Yes, like many powerful woman, Mary the Magdalene was demonized, shunned & silenced, for a time, framed as a prostitute by a Pope, conflated with the projection of womankind as evil. She has always been controversial & dangerous to the status quo, like most women with a higher destiny. And yet, those in the know, exalt her as The Beloved Companion, call her prophet, call her Priestess. ~hag Delve deeper below: The Tower: Mary Magdelene – Priestess of Isis -Sponsored by The Minneapolis Theosophical Society.
