Greetings friends – Well we made it – to the 2nd phase in the 3-fold Festival of Easter-tide - The Ascension! Our journey began with the Cosmic & Earthly reality that from Death comes New Life – fulfilling the human longing for Resurrection. Yes, the Easter-Tide flows on, it goes further – 40 days after the Mysteries of Death & Resurrection, we receive the 2nd aspect – a new archetype expanding the human soul thru the Festival of Ascension. There is an esoteric significance to the 40 days – 1st of all, the symbolism of the # 40, which BTW: is mentioned 149 times in the Bible, is important to contemplate, it represents an initiation process, some sort of trial, a period of testing, which we must endure to become more spiritually aware, to achieve a triumph of the Spirit – a chance for advancement. Due to the nature of the ‘Moveable Feast’ aspect of Easter-Tide, the dates may change, but Ascension is always on a Thursday – Now isn’t that interesting.
Thor’s day – representing the planet Jupiter, the archetype of growth & expansion – model of the Beneficent Ruler, an impulse we can tune into, & help manifest in our world.
& then 10 days later - The 3rd phase of Easter-Tide, brings us to ‘Whitsun’ or Pentecost, which means White Sunday, or 50 days - When the Divine Feminine aspect of the Trinity descends - with healing in Her wings - to empower us - with tongues of fire - for the achievement of our highest individual destiny.
So let’s tune into the energies available to us now at this Season of expansion - of blossoming & coming into fullness. The plant kingdom, stirring upwards in growth, is touched by the warmth & light from above, calling forth color & scent. The whole of Nature reaches upwards towards the heights. The longing of the human soul also strives upward, in unison with Nature, seeking the touch of world-warmth from the Sun. This mood of ascension attunes all of life to the cosmic expanses. Thru the glory of the Seasons, we take part in the breathing-in, & the breathing-out of the Earth Soul.
At the time of Ascension, Nature celebrates the expansion of the Soul of the Earth - it is not by chance that the 40 days between Easter & Ascension coincide with this season. Every year, when the Earth begins to breathe out in the Springtime, the mystery of the Ascension of Christ, Who is the Spirit of the Earth, is renewed. The Constellations are shifting into their Summer places; & the Planets tread the ordered measure of their courses around them. These points of light in the heavens, point us to the Spiritual Beings who direct the life of the Universe. From this point of view, Ascension can be called the ‘Festival of the Elementals; as well as The Festival of the Hierarchies’.
This was prefigured in the story of Jacob from the Old Testament. Thru his dream of the stairway to heaven, Jacob gave us a prophetic vision of The Ascension – A golden ladder set between Heaven & Earth, on which the Hierarchies, & our beloved dead, released thru Christ’s ‘Harrowing of Hell’ on Holy Saturday; can now ascend & descend. The Christ impulse dwells in the Earth, & extends into the Divine Presence, to fulfill the prophecy of Jacobs ladder, so that thru this deed, humankind is brought near again to the cosmos.
And what is important to recognize, is that, as the Christ has ascended, so too, in the fullness of time will humanity be transfigured. We came from Spirit into matter; & from matter we will once again become wholly Spirit. The company of the Hierarchies wait, for us, their younger siblings to ascend, 1st in our thinking, to meet them in fellowship, as they work all the while at our sides. Clues of their ever present help is everywhere, especially evident thru the Festival life.
Friends, the 2nd Christ-Revelation, this ‘coming in the clouds’ - which Rudolf Steiner spoke about as taking hold starting in 1933 - is here! The Nazi’s were able to keep this revelation veiled for a time, but they can not stop it - The fulfillment of the secret promise of the Ascension is the 2nd coming - It was said to the apostles, “He will come again, in like manner, as you have seen Him go, up into the clouds of heaven.” The Ascension is the seed of this 2nd Coming; & the 2nd coming is the fulfillment of the Ascension.
Besides Jacobs ladder, another prefiguring of this 2nd coming is shown in Paul’s conversion on the road to Damascus.
We see it also in the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. And I believe the connection with the 2nd coming of Christ in the etheric, is also made manifest thru the many Marian Apparitions. Steiner tells us that people who can re-live the event of the Ascension in their soul, can have their own Damascus experience. That starting in the 20th century, human beings are able for the 1st time, to experience this Christ-event Spiritually, as St. Paul did. Before that, only the Priestess/King Initiates, or pure-hearted peasant folk, like the simple Shepherds, were able to have such experiences. The poet Novalis touched on the occult truth of the connection of the Ascension & the 2nd coming in his poem: “In heavy clouds let Him ascend, And so also let Him downward tread. In cooling streams let Him be sent, In flames of fire blaze His descent, In air & essence, sound & dew - To permeate our whole earth thru”
Here we see the connection with: ‘As above so below’. The realm of the clouds, is where the Elements meet – a mix of air & water, particles of earth, warmth rising up into the etheric realm - where formative forces seed the life body - that borders the material world. Entering that realm moves us into the etheric aura, of Mother Earth. We all pass thru this sphere at birth, & after death. We can tune into this realm of vital forces - to recognize the 2nd Coming – inviting a new vitality into our life body, the etheric dwelling place of our Thinking Heart. “My head bears the being of the resting stars. My breast harbors the life of the wandering stars, My body lives and moves amid the elements. This am I.” ~Rudolf Steiner
