(1) 1989 was the year when my now ex-wife and I were reconciled after a 2 1/2 year separation. We started going to a small non-denominational church in San Francisco, where one of the members became our landlord. So throughout the year, we lived with our little daughter Angela in a one-bedroom on Geary Street. I also played piano every Tuesday at a place called the Simple Pleasures Cafe on Balboa, and eventually landed a long term temp job in the Financial District, working for PG&E. Generally happy memories of living in San Francisco.
(2) I attended Emmanuel Lutheran Church for the second time on Sunday, and went to the class afterwards for about the sixth or seventh time. Having been a member of three Lutheran churches in the past, it felt a lot like "coming home." I feel completely accepted there, not looked down upon or ostracized as I have felt at other churches.
(3) I like it when a young person trusts me and looks up to me and does not think I am strange or over-the-hill. There's one who comes into the Center like that, and I sometimes see her going to work or with her boyfriend in one of the cafes. Lily has a sparkle about her, and my spirits are lifted whenever I run into her.
(4) Often I feel grateful and relieved when I step into my apartment, knowing I lived outside for many years, and I used to take the blessing of indoor living for granted. But I'm even more grateful for the changes that have taken place throughout the past eight years, including a feeling of acceptance in a caring, close-knit community.
(5) Having been more absent-minded than usual lately, I misplaced the power supply and cord to my MacBook four times in about the last ten days. The good news is that three of the times, it will still sitting in the same socket at one of the Cafes, and the fourth time, it had been put into the Lost and Found at the Co-Op. So I still have it, mercifully enough. Moreover, my friend Kathy ordered a generic one for me from online as a gift, to keep at home as a spare. Also I hadn't seen my prescription glasses since Saturday, and they too were unearthed from the Co-Op Lost and Found. Sure glad there isn't a whole lot of theft in this town, and I have supportive friends who are willing to help.
