Traditional graduation song sung by the OHHS Choraliers - May 30, 2024.
This tradition was started by Stephen Wipfli. This beautiful song has been included in the graduation ceremony for several decades. Below we provide a video of the 2024 performance and the words that come from an anonymous source with additional words by Audrey Snyder.
The Wish
Anonymous text with additional words by Audrey Snyder
I will not wish you glory,
nor the radiant glow of richness and prestige,
And I will not wish thee riches,
nor lasting treasure, nor a life of ease.
But that wherever you may go
some weary heart shall gladden at the smile,
or shadowed life shall know sunshine for awhile.
Unbram fugat caritas,
Noctem lux eliminated,
Lux tue splendeur,
May thy light shine.
(Charity puts shadow to flight as light banishes darkness.)
And when thy heart is set aright,
Thy path shall be a track of light,
Tread with gentle spirit bright,
Like angels' footsteps passing through the night.
I will not wish thee cleverness,
nor a brilliant mind and scholarly acclaim,
And I will not wish thee beauty,
nor dazzling fashion, nor a life of fame.
But that wherever you may go
some darkened soul shall brighten with thy care,
or saddened spirit find joy again to share.
