In an anthology of poetry and verse The Rattle Bag edited by Seamus Heaney and Ted Hughes you can find such a wide range of poems. My conclusion is if was good enough for Heaney and Hughes then it is certainly good enough for me! Nursery rhymes are strange things and often quiet sad and at times violent! Jack breaking his crown, Humpty Dumpty 's great fall, old mother Hubard's bare cupboard, three blind mice losing their tails from a carving knife, London bridge is falling down! Today from Heaney and Hughes I use Taffy was a Welshman - Taffy often a nickname given to people who live in the southern part of Wales where the river Taff is located. The photo above shows the river Taff near Cardiff along with the iconic millennium sports stadium which opened in 1999 . It will host Taylor Swift in June 2024! That stadium today hosted Wales against Scotland in the rugby 6 Nations Championship. A wonderful game with Scotland winning by the narrowest of margins, 27-26!
Taffy was a Welshman, Taffy was a thief;
Taffy came to my house and stole a piece of beef;
I went to Taffy's house, Taffy wasn't in;
I jumped upon his Sunday hat and poked it with a pin.
Taffy was a Welshman, Taffy was a sham;
Taffy came to my house and stole a piece of lamb;
I went to Taffy's house, Taffy was away,
I stuffed his socks with sawdust and filled his shoes with clay.
Taffy was a Welshman, Taffy was a cheat,
Taffy came to my house, and stole a piece of meat;
I went to Taffy's house, Taffy was not there,
I hung his coat and trousers to roast before a fire. Anon.
Prayer:
Lord God,
Things are topsy-turvy in your
kingdom, O Lord. The poor bear
gifts of great worth, the dead rise,
the meek inherit the earth. Teach us
how to live in an upside-down world
where we are called to welcome the
outcast, prepare a feast for the ragged,
and forgive those who offend us. Amen.
( prayer from Common Prayer: A Liturgy for Ordinary Radicals).
