My two dogs really love me tonight. Or so it seems. When I went into my study to work they stood outside scratching on the door until I let them in. And now they are surprisingly well-behaved. Instead of bouncing around like they usually do, they are lying on the floor, not moving at all. Good dogs!
Except they're not fooling me. I know what's behind their good behavior. It is not love that makes them want to be close to me. It is the fear of the thunder that is rumbling all around. Most of the time when I call them, they won't come, and when I tell them to stop they don't. When the moon is full, they bark all night, right outside my window, and keep me awake. Yes, I am their master, but all they want from me is food and protection from the storms.
