| camestrosfelapton Dec 1 | So there will now forever be this weird connection in my head between the unspeakably awful Henry Kissinger and former lead singer of the Pogues, Shane MacGowan. MacGowan did not live nearly as long as Kissinger but perhaps also lived longer than many people expected him to. A long life of substance abuse (mainly alcohol but also other drugs) was not kind to him physically. I'm not great at following music, if anything the music I've listened to has been almost parasitic - whatever siblings, parents, cousins, friends, flatmates, partners were listening to. However, the first album I bought with my own money was Red Roses for Me, the first album by the Pogues. Mixing traditional Irish folk music with the punk/post-punk energy of The Clash along with a lyrical view of the world that combined social commentary with myth and religion, it was music that was familiar and starkly different at the same time. A drunken, violent, abusive world full of myth and magic, mental illness, alienation and history. | | | | You can also reply to this email to leave a comment. | | | | |
