I have always been a bit wary about making promises in case I can't keep them. So what is a promise? There are several definitions of the word 'promise' and here are a couple. 'a declaration or assurance that one will do something or that a particular thing will happen' and 'assure someone that one will definitely do something or that something will happen' Can we ever be sure of something nowadays? I don't think so and therefore I am wary of making promises.
However, I see so many promises being made by those in power. Many of these were several years ago or even longer and nothing happened. Now the same promises have resurfaced and I wonder how many of them will actually happen.
What is the point of promising to do something when you know that it cannot be done? These are known as empty promises and I have seen and heard far too many of those kind of promises. I hear and see them every day.
If I make a promise to pop in to see my next door neighbour to check they're OK, then I make sure I do that. They are expecting to see me and I would not like to disappoint. I make a point of not promising to do things that I know I might not be able to do.
This blog is a little shorter than normal as after 20 minutes my sight blurs and I need to get away from the computer. But I will continue writing as long as I can and that is a promise.
