Every year, FCSN recognizes individuals that have greatly contributed to its community. Nominated by FCSN South Bay program director Vivian Chung, Bob Carlson received FCSN's 2023 Volunteer of the Year award for his outstanding work in connecting FCSN with other organizations in the Campbell area.

Carlson was introduced to FCSN in 2018 and made a memorable first impression. "The first time we met, the first thing he asked was 'tell me what you need' very sincerely," Chung recalls. She also praises Carlson's humorous and easy-going personality, which makes working with him smooth and comforting.
Since then, Carlson has organized many different types of events, such as connecting FCSN with the city of Campbell and the Rotary Club division there. He has also helped many clients do volunteer work that has been recognized by the mayor. One of those activities takes place at J.D. Morgan Park, where clients help rake leaves and paint benches twice a week. Additionally, he has found toy drives and hosted luncheons. Chung mentions that Carlson "has a very good heart," and he is always willing to find resources to help clients. Concerned about clients' health, safety, and well-being, Carlson connected FCSN with a chiropractor who teaches clients to do different exercises to build muscle.

With all these different types of events, challenges are bound to appear. Yet, Carlson's amiable and communicative personality allows him to work well with others. "If there is a challenge, he will either help us solve it or tell us not to worry about it," Chung comments. Carlson always takes the initiative to contact staff to keep them in the loop and is very supportive during events.
To show their appreciation for Carlson, Chung and other staff threw a surprise birthday party for him after an event. There was a small cake, and some staff even dressed like him. "We are really thankful to have him. We met non-stop even during the pandemic time," Chung says.

Carlson has become a vital part of FCSN and has opened many doors for special needs individuals. Besides helping clients gain important life skills, he has made them feel more involved with the community. Chung encourages others to volunteer, even if it's only for a few hours each week. "If everyone is doing a little bit like Bob, it can open so many doors for our clients."
