THINK TOGETHER.

Have you heard the expression "Fools rush in?" What do you think it means?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 19:2. Desire without knowledge is not good, and whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way.

Solomon here warns about one of our most common problems – we ask for things without really understanding what we are asking for. Have you ever done that? Maybe you really want a pet, but you don't understand how hard it is to take care of a pet. Or maybe you really want to play football, but you had no idea how hard it is to play football. Solomon says don't make haste. Or don't be in a hurry to get or do things without first finding out everything that is involved. Make sure you know what you're doing.

There are things much more important than even pets and football that this can apply to. Often we desire things that can have serious consequences, and we rush into things without knowledge, especially God's knowledge. And this is a huge mistake. For example, we might really desire friends, and so we do things without thinking just to show off or look cool to others, hoping that we will get what we want – more friends. But when we know that Jesus loves us and is our best friend, we don't need to rush into showing off to make friends.

Or maybe we really desire to have money so we promise to do chores to earn it, but without really knowing how hard it might be to do the job. Sometimes this strong desire for money is called greed, and greed can really control your life and make you do foolish things without knowing that Jesus loves us and takes care of us. Yes, we should work hard to earn money, but not to the point of foolish greed.

No matter what we desire we must always start with the knowledge of how much Jesus desires us. Then we can ask the most important question – do I desire this more than I desire Jesus? Then we can think, and pray, and get advice, before rushing into things.

Because of Jesus we know that God loves us and takes care of us.

With Jesus we don't have to rush into things without thinking.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

A great way to practice knowledge before rushing into things is "Pro and Con lists." Practice making a list for something your kids have been asking for.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, help me to slow down, and trust you without chasing everything I want. Amen.
