M1, Singtel, and StarHub to Retire 3G Services and Focus on Enhanced 5G Offerings

In response to the changing telecommunications landscape and the widespread adoption of advanced mobile technologies, M1, Singtel, and StarHub jointly announced their decision to retire all 3G services, including voice, messaging, and data, with effect from 31 July 2024.

Over the years, 3G networks have played a significant role in connecting people across Singapore, but as mobile technology advances, the usage of 3G services has significantly declined. Recognizing this shift in consumer preferences and mobile usage patterns, the three major telcos have taken the proactive step to phase out 3G services, enabling a focus on the next-generation 5G offerings.

By retiring 3G networks, mobile operators can repurpose valuable spectrum resources to bolster and optimize their 5G services. 5G technology offers a host of benefits, including lightning-fast data speeds, higher data throughput, and improved security and reliability. Emphasizing the importance of 5G networks as crucial enablers for both consumer and enterprise users, the transition to these advanced networks is a natural progression for Singapore's tech-savvy society.

In preparation for the 3G service retirement, M1, Singtel, and StarHub have been actively engaging in outreach programs to encourage 3G customers to migrate to newer 4G and 5G mobile networks. Already the preferred choice for most Singaporeans, the 4G and 5G networks provide enhanced features and capabilities to meet the diverse needs of users.

It is worth noting that only a small percentage of customers continue to use 3G services, primarily comprising users with older mobile devices or SIM cards that cannot connect to the newer 4G and 5G networks. To ensure a smooth and seamless transition, the telcos are committed to communicating effectively with these remaining 3G users and providing the necessary assistance to facilitate their migration to the more advanced networks.

Customers who currently rely on 3G-only or early-release 4G handsets will have a wide array of 4G and 5G handsets available at different price points, making it convenient for them to upgrade to the newer networks.

For those still using 3G-only SIM cards, the telcos have made arrangements to facilitate the upgrade process. You can visit their respective operator's website to find out the specific steps and locations for upgrading your SIM cards.

As Singapore embraces the future of telecommunications technology, M1, Singtel, and StarHub are committed to providing a seamless and enhanced mobile experience for all customers. The retirement of 3G services marks a new chapter in the nation's digital transformation journey, ensuring that Singapore remains at the forefront of innovation and connectivity.
