TLIC FAMILY: PROVERBS. DAY 67. MARCH 8: WORDS.

THINK TOGETHER.

Have you ever made a promise that you couldn't keep?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 6:2-3. 2if you are snared in the words of your mouth, caught in the words of your mouth, 3then do this, my son, and save yourself...

"I swear it will never happen again."

"I promise I'll clean my room."

"I'll pay you back later, I promise."

Do you talk this way? Do you make promises lightly without really thinking about what you are saying? Solomon calls this being snared in the words of your mouth. Our own words trap us sometimes don't they? A wise person doesn't make promises very often because promises can be hard to keep.

Jesus taught us to let our "Yes be Yes and our No be No." That means that you shouldn't say yes to something unless you are really going to do it. And if you do say yes to something then you should make sure you get it done just like you said.

Why does Jesus care so much about what we say and what promises we make? Because what we say and the promises we don't keep reveal what is inside of our hearts. If you say you will do something and then you don't do it, that reveals that you don't have much love or respect for the other person. That's why Jesus always keep his promises to us – because he loves us and he respects us. Even though we are far beneath him, he still takes seriously everything he says to us. His yes is always yes, and his no is always no.

Because of Jesus we can trust everything God says to us.

With Jesus we can always do what we say, while being careful not to make promises we can't keep.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Let Matthew 5:37 be a family memory verse. Make it a practice in your house to not say "I promise," or "I swear." Say "I'll do my best" when you're not sure if you can do it. And if you say YES to something then always let your yes be yes.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, your yes to me is always true. Thank you for doing everything you say. Amen.
