Have you ever had to ask someone to forgive you? Was it hard to do?
READ TOGETHER
Do you remember when King David committed those very terrible sins. He stole his friend's wife and then killed his friend. David could have been put to death for his sins. But God is merciful and forgiving, isn't he? Here is one of the psalms that David wrote when he sinned. It is a beautiful psalm asking God for forgiveness and cleansing. Listen to it carefully. Can you hear David asking for forgiveness?
Psalm 51:1-12. 1Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. 2Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! 3For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 4Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. 5Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. 7Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. 9Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. 10Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. 11Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. 12Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
What did you hear David ask for from God (v.2,7-10)? David asks God to remove his sin, and wash away his guilt. He wants God to give him a new clean heart. In David's time people would sacrifice animals to God to cover up their sins, but this didn't actually change a person's heart did it? And that's what David wanted more than anything - a clean heart that really loved God.
Jesus is the answer to King David's prayer. On the cross Jesus blotted out all of our transgressions, and cleansed us from all of our sins. He made us whiter than snow and created in us a clean heart. And Jesus will never, ever, ever take away the Holy Spirit from us. When we have Jesus, we have everything David asked for.
Because of Jesus We have all of God and all our sins are forgiven.
With Jesus we can forgive others as we have been forgiven.
