Chapter 6
Kim reached home in a haste. The day was long and tiring for Nora. Within no time, she fell asleep. But there was yet another long night awaiting Kim. After putting Nora to sleep, she went to her room and sat down with the box that had her memories, perhaps a history, an untold saga, a buried truth tapped within.
She dug through the contents of the box and kept them aside without giving them a second look. She finally reached the bottom of the box, her fingers entangled in the chain with a turquoise pendant. The pendant had several cracks, which might have been a result of some hard chucking. She held the pendant in her hands and started chanting fervently. It was almost inaudible at first, but gradually the intensity of her chanting increased. Her glare continuously kept shifting from the pendant towards the sky and back. It seemed like a routine of a seance. She chanted "From the oblivious heights of the sky and the unknown depth of the dark sea, show me what lies ahead that I can't see".
After chanting repeatedly, the chant didn't work, leaving Kim distressed. She cried out loud, in frustration, pain and anxiety "why don't you work? Why don't you show me the danger that lies ahead? I don't want to lose my child." Kim was reduced to a burst cloud that was full of tears, shouting at the piece of a stone. Stressed and drained out, Kim ended up burying her face in her palms.
"A curse is the hardest spell to break, isn't it?" a tense voice startled Kim from behind. She lifted her face and turned to look in the direction of the voice. It was Tojo standing at the entrance of her room. This left Kim puzzled. "It couldn't be Tojo or is it?" she thought. She felt that the discretion between different realms is slowly fading. She kept staring at Tojo, who slowly walked towards Kim and settled on the other side of the table. The fixated, confused gaze continued, but not for long. The fall of events and curiosity made Kim ask a pet if it just spoke to her.
"Tojo, did you say something?" The night was far from over. Many revelations were yet to fall out of a closed closet of the past. "You didn't realise who am I?" Tojo asked back Kim. Petrified Kim could only nod her head in disagreement.
Tojo stood up on his twos, crossed his forepaws against his chest, lifted his head, pointed toward the sky, and howled. It changed its form. It was none other than Yagi, the trusted guard of the Hanuks clan, the descendants of heavenly angels, fighting against the dark world entities. A bloodline dedicated to protecting the earth from the dark shadows of evil. In their human form, they possessed superpowers. Superpowers Kim was the next in line, carrying forward the legacy. She was skilled in martial arts and bestowed the ability to read minds with a touch on their hearts. The pendant was given to her on her 16th birthday by her grandmother as a step towards her becoming the leader of the clan after Baho and Taria, her parents. The pendant that was gifted to her by her grandmother was a clairvoyant, a peep into the future but with limited ability. The pendant would only show a time range of one day into the future or hinting the possible dangers in the near vicinity. The pendant was given to Kim to prepare her for the greater responsibilities that lay ahead of her, step by step.
Any luck with the pendant?" asked Yagi, in a serious tone. Yagi, a shape-shifting soldier of the Hanuks clan, who like a shepherd shielded his flock from all the perils. Despite his powers, he assumed his position to serve the family and aid them in their fight against the evil forces. Yagi can assume any shape, exude brute physical power and can sometimes cast a spell or two too.
Kim, who was away from her family for a long time, couldn't hold herself back anymore. She flung towards Yagi and embraced him, drenching him with her melancholy. "Oh, Yagi! how much I missed you all." "You can't imagine how terrified I am." "How's mom and dad?" "Did they forgive me?" "Did mom send you here?" "Does she have any message for me, any vision in particular?" "Why I was not able to find who you were?" "Why Tojo?" Kim was talking like a flooded river.
Yagi interrupted her and signalled her to slow down with his hand and a long silence ensued. The silence wasn't of any help. Finally, Yagi broke the important news. "Yes mom sent me, but they live no more." His words crashed Kim.
