What was the name of Bates' first wife on DOWNTON ABBEY?
They can make all the movies they want, but DOWNTON ABBEY will always belong to PBS! So I thought I'd pose a question this week involving one my favorite DA couples: John and Ann Bates. The valet and the maid went through enough obstacles to their romance as any on the series.
One obstacle in particular was Bates' first wife. They had married young and had an unhappy union. Bates spent time in jail for a theft his spouse committed. When Bates was at Downton, his estranged wife blackmailed him and refused to grant him a divorce so that he could marry Anna Smith. Later, his wife was killed and Bates was tried and sentenced for her murder. Anna eventually helped exonerate him and the couple were able to wed and live happily ever after (mostly).
Bates' first wife was played by Irish actress Maria Kennedy Doyle. She only appeared in three episodes in series two of DOWNTON ABBEY but the character made quite the impression.
So what was her name? What was the name of Bates' first wife on DOWNTON ABBEY?
Think about it and I'll post the correct answer later.
