The month of December has a magical feel to it. Most of the time I hear mixed reviews from others on how they feel about this month. Some either love it, hate it or are somewhere in-between. Personally, my pros list isn't lacking positive things to say about December. However, I'd be lying if I said there wasn't a handful of cons listed either.
On the top of my pros list is that I still have children at home that believe in Santa and the Elves. If you don't have traditions with the elves, their magic returns on the first of December. We had some visitors last night that made quite the mess in our pantry. You betcha, the magic of the elves reappeared at our house and the excitement of two little girls has been undeniable.
Sometime between putting the girls to bed last night and waking up this morning these little elves had dumped flour all over my counter with the message, "We are back" written in it. Both girls were excited, happy, and anxious to see what their elves had been up to while they were sleeping. They tip toed out of their bedrooms and immediately their faces lit up upon seeing the Elves in the pantry. The sparkle of the magic of Christmas present in their eyes and the belief in their hearts still glistened. It was the joy I needed to start my Wednesday off with. Sure there was a mess to clean (con) and some of my baking flour wasted (con) but the innocence that is left and the magic that is felt is certainly a pro.
My oldest daughter turns 10 in June. As we all know, this can feel bittersweet. I know of a handful of children her age who no longer believe and whose parents have already told them the truth about Santa and the elves. As my oldest woke up and still had that excitement about the elf this morning, I was grateful that at 9 she still feels the belief in her heart and the magic in the air. I know this chapter will close sooner now then it will later and this can be really difficult on both parent and child. For now, we both get to enjoy this moment in time that brings us all a little bit of joy. Isn't that truly what Santa and the elves are really all about?!
Enjoy this time with your kids while it lasts.
