Thoughts to pour into the Whit-Sun Chalice: Many are called - but few are chosen…Will you elect of their own free will, to gather in the Upper Room…? As we move deeper into the glories of Spring, the Elementals awaken, & we experience in Nature signs & images of the Earth-soul in Ascension. The sense of arising spreads all around us. And in the play of the Elements, Fire seems to have the last word in the essential dialogue between the heights & depths. From above resounds the fiery Word, & the other elements follow the creative call with joy & the beauty of ascent.
50 Days after Easter = Pentecost or Whitsun, we are called to celebrate a Festival of Flowers - out among the buds opening under the increasing power of the Sun, under the etheric & astral influences. The heart of the human being as it opens to warmth & light, is like the flower, aligning itself to the Sun, which permeates the Earth. And what pours down from the Sun, giving the flower, our image in reverse, the potency it needs, is like the tongues of fire descending upon the heads of the disciples, for us humans. Today we can see Whitsun as a Festival of the 1st fruits of the Spirit. This Festival is not just bestowed on us by nature. It must be called forth…thru our own free will. Some say it is a festival of the future, for we must grow ripe to withstand the surging of the Spirit. Whitsun is the Festival of our True Higher Self, which as yet only hovers above us like a dove.
The season of Whitsun-tide is the World-Festival of the NOW, highlighting the challenging relationships of Self & community. Rudolf Steiner calls this Holy Day ‘The Festival of United Soul Endeavor’. He lectured a great deal about Whitsun. He spoke about Spiritual Science as a Whitsun gift. How do we work as individuals to transform our ingrained sympathies & antipathies? How do we purify our astral nature in order to make ourselves into a vessel worthy to receive the Holy Spirit, giving us the possibility of manifesting the ‘Spirit Self’ – Healing the formative forces of our Life-Spirit, which will provide the capacity to create new social forms..? This Festival of Community, arises from the harmonizing of our higher selves which are ONE in the spirit.
This brings us back to the great social question of our time: The individual in relation to the whole – the community - & the cosmos. Only by a social & personal catharsis which allows the true Spirit of Freedom - the true I AM - to govern our small personal egotism & the lower impulses of our nature, can a new community, & new language of universal sister/brotherhood, be created.
Only out of the spiritual recognition of the Universal Human Being, will the ideas & applications of a new approach to: Comradery in Economics; Equality in Human Rights; & Freedom in the Educational/Medical/Cultural/Spiritual life, be accomplished.

331 – According to Rudolf Steiner’s Calendar of the Soul, today is the birthday of Julian the Apostate. This individuality is spoken about many times by Steiner. Most notably in the Easter Paradox lecture of 23 April 1924: “By Roman times the Star Wisdom had been lost. The Roman Emperor Julian the “Apostate” tried to re-introduce it, but it was not meant to be, & he was murdered. The advent of Christ brought the ancient Star Religion to life again- but in a new form- teaching that the Sun God now had his place on the Earth, accessible to all humanity, not just the initiates. But those in power denounced this as superstition. People were only expected to believe in the external, historical life of Jesus in Palestine. Consequently the Church became the supreme authority in how & what people should think, which ignored the whole cosmic setting of the Easter event.”
In the Karmic Relationship lecture Vol. 4 lecture 6 he speaks about his other incarnations as Herzeloyde, & Tycho Brahe.
1861 – Deathday of Camillo of Cavour, an Italian statesman & a leading figure in the movement toward Italian unification, throughout the Second Italian War of Independence & Garibaldi’s campaigns. After the declaration of a united Kingdom of Italy, Cavour took office as the first Prime Minister of Italy; he died after only three months in office. Cavour put forth several economic reforms in his native region of Piedmont in his earlier years, & founded the political newspaper Il Risorgimento. In Karmic Relations vol. 1 lecture 4 Steiner speaks of him as an initiate from Alsace.

1875 – Birthday of Thomas Mann, German novelist, short story writer, social critic, philanthropist, essayist, & the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate. His highly symbolic & ironic epic novels are noted for their insight into the psychology of the artist & the intellectual. His analysis & critique of the German soul used modernized German & Biblical stories, as well as the ideas of Goethe, Nietzsche & Schopenhauer.
