It was shortly before midnight, on 25 February 1861, when Rudolf Steiner was born in the tiny village of Kraljevec - part of the once great Austrian Empire, (now part of Croatia). The newborn suffered a hemorrhage. The Midwife quickly swaddled the babe, gave him up for dead, & left him. He bled for hours until his bandages turned completely red. This huge loss of blood was the infants very first earthly experience. Fearing their 1st born child would soon die, an emergency Baptism was called for. But the local Priest of the village Church was not available - Not knowing if the small pale infant would live or die, he was carried by his distraught parents 2 miles - thru the wintry February cold & snow, to the Church of Draskovec, the neighboring village. Dr. Ernst Katz tells us: “It is significant that the Church of Draskovec was dedicated to St. Michael. It was a St. Michael Church! Apparently, destiny had arranged circumstances so that St. Michael would stand guard, as it were, like a god-parent, at this human being's entry into the physical life on earth.” Although he was tiny & sickly, the babe hung on against all odds, while his parents franticly arranged for a quick Baptism – He was named: Rudolfus Josephus Laurentius Steiner on 27 February 1861. Because of the quick unusual circumstances, the date of the Baptism became listed in the Church record as his birthdate. We might think that from a spiritual point of view, Steiner’s traumatic beginning could be an indication that until the Baptism, the question was still open as to whether Rudolf Steiner's entelechy would incarnate at that time, in that body, or return to the spiritual world. We can also ask: Was it negligence on the part of the midwife? Or was it an indication of his unique stamp of karma? Or…Were the adversarial powers working to keep this great Rosicrucian Initiate out of incarnation?
What does the life & work of Rudolf Steiner mean for us today? In one of my study groups this morning we were discussing Steiner’s birth story, & I was saying how I see him not only as a Great Christian Initiate, but also as the modern ‘bearer of the Holy Grail’ – The Grail King of our present age. In some esoteric traditions, like in Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival Tale, the Holy Chalice is often called a "precious stone". This imagination is linked to the ancient legend of the fall of Lucifer. The false ‘Light Bearer’ is cast down by Michael - & as he falls from the heavenly sphere of the Sun, a most precious stone breaks free from his crown. This Cosmic Gemstone, representing the glories of pre-Christian Wisdom, is redeemed as the cup of Christ, shared in a New Sacrament, at the Last Supper for the first time with the 12 disciples – including the betrayer - The cup that later received the blood of the Christos – which Steiner names as representing "the full power of the human ego" – “the substance of Cosmic Love” - the essence of the Logos, which was poured out for all humankind at the Turning Point of Time on the Golgotha Hill. The Grail was said to have been vouchsafed into the venerable protection of the initiate Joseph of Arimathea, who carried it to Hibernia. After his death, the Grail was held under the charge of the Angels for safekeeping in the etheric realm of the Spiritual World. Later, in 8th century it reappeared again on the Earth, to become the focus of the Grail Mysteries founded by Titurel. The Parzival story is the Hero’s Journey every modern human being can choose to take up, which can be likened to the Rosicrucian Quest for the ‘Philosophers Stone’. Our evolutionary task it is to transform this fallen stone, into the Holy Grail – a Christic vessel free from the influences of the ‘fallen Light Bearer’. Our goal, modeled by Rudolf Steiner, is to receive into the chalice of our individual higher “I”, the forces of the Cosmic Ego of Christ, which has become accessible to humanity as a result of the Mystery of Golgotha, facilitated thru the "Science of the Grail" – Rudolf Steiner’s description of Anthroposophy – the Wisdom of the Human Being - a modern path of Initiation leading the Spiritual essence of the human being to the Spiritual reality of the Universe. "Thus, the initiates of modern times can be called "initiates of the Grail". The pathway into supersensible worlds, the first stages of which have been described here, culminates in the "science of the Grail'. ~ Rudolf Steiner, ‘Occult Science’. At the Christmas Conference 100 years ago, Rudolf Steiner makes the Grail fully accessible, manifest for each of us as the Being AnthropoSophia - implanting the Foundation Stone of Love into the hearts & souls of a new Rosicrucian Fellowship of striving Michaelic guardians of the Holy Grail = Wisdom redeemed by Love.
Why do I bring indications about various birth & death days, in consideration of Seasonal cycles, Astrology, & current World events - pointing out their possible correspondences with historic happenings? Good Question – When we tune into these world shaping milestones, we are forging connections with the Eternal Spirit of great human beings that go beyond this dimension, bringing their forces alive in this now, which is ever building our future reality. 777 – Deathday of Saint Walpurga The earliest representation of Walpurga, in the early 11th-century Hitda Codex, made in Cologne, depicts her holding stylized stalks of grain. The grain attribute represents the older pagan concept of the Grain Mother. Peasant farmers fashioned her replica in a corn dolly at harvest time & told tales to explain Saint Walpurga’s presence in the grain sheaf. St. Richard, when starting with his two sons on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, entrusted Walburga, then 11 years old, to the abbess of Wimborne. Walpurga was educated by the nuns of Wimborne Abbey, Dorset, where she spent 26 years as a member of the community. She then travelled with her brothers, Willibald & Winebald, to Francia to assist Saint Boniface, her mother’s brother, in evangelizing among the still-pagan Germans. Because of her rigorous training, she was able to write her brother Winibald’s vita & an account in Latin of his travels in Palestine. As a result, she is often called the first female author of both England & Germany. Walpurga became a nun in the double monastery of Heidenheim am Hahnenkamm, which was founded by her other brother, Willibald, who appointed her as his successor. Following his death in 751, she became the abbess.
