Back to Dad's record collection, and whilst I'm dipping in and out of it, it would be remiss of me not to post something by Kris Kristofferson which I apparently haven't posted here before.
And that turned out to be considerably easier than I thought it would be.
For me, there are three albums Kristofferson released which are the absolute benchmark which, much as I love him, I don't think he's ever managed to better: 1970's Kristofferson (also known as Me and Bobby McGee, released in 1971 after Kristofferson bombed and, crucially, Janis Joplin died); 1971's The Silver Tongued Devil and I, and 1973's Jesus Was a Capricorn.
Looking back, I'm staggered to find that I've never posted the title track from that 1971 gem before; it's a song which is synoymous with those Saturday afternoon drives to visit family I've mentioned before. There was a part of the drive which took us through woodland, where we would try to spot rabbits and pheasants in the undergrowth, and this song almost always seemed to be playing at that part of the journey.
Just listening to it now evokes memories, of us travelling together, my Dad with the window open to let the smoke from his Marlboro cigarette escape, the rest of us singing along, eyes alive for wildlife.
I never really thought about what the song was about until years later, when it finally dawned on me. I mentioned this to my brother, when we were going through our "OK, we admit it, we love these songs" phase. He told me I was a "poor, naive twat", which given I was like 8 at the time, is probably right.
Anyway, here's KK, and his song about a lady being trapped by a smooth-talker:
Kris Kristofferson - The Silver Tongued Devil and I
More soon.
