This little painting was strongly influenced by time spent at my childhood home while my grandmother's peonies were blooming. Every square inch of that house is loaded with memories of family, of cooking, of working in the gardens, of being loved. Recently, my sister and I even found Memere's hand-written journal of recipes in the back of a kitchen drawer, including her recipes for cough syrup, rhubarb pudding, and rice pudding, and her homemade baked beans (spicier than regular Boston baked beans). The recipes were on yellowed paper and cardboard scraps. I think the faded writing and old papers influenced the tonal palette of this painting. Memories fade, but certain moments remain vivid.
