Daily writing prompt
How important is spirituality in your life?
The trickiest thing about this prompt is defining or not, the word spirituality.
My definition would include the basics that might come to mind for most hearing the word, things like whether someone prays or meditates, or attends services, performs rituals. Also it would also include whether someone has alive ethics.
Perhaps not everyone would include ethics, but I believe if someone is consciously attentive to examining their motivations in an effort toward doing less harm in the world; if they care about the earth and its inhabitants and living a life that is mindful of that care, they have a spiritual practice. To be artistic is to be spiritual, and so is to be excellent at something, or true to one's integrity when no one else is looking.
I'm always trying to parse the lines and make distinctions around the idea of beliefs, however. I like the idea of shedding beliefs per se, in favor of active exploration that works toward inclusive openness and curiosity.
Spirituality is deeply important to me. At some point most of us reach beyond ourselves in some way. Sometimes beyond reaches back. 🙂
I certainly can't convey better than Muso Soseki:
Toki-no-Ge
(satori poem)
Year after year
I dug in the earth
looking for the blue of heaven
only to feel
the pile of dirt
choking me
until once in the dead of night
I tripped on a broken brick
and kicked it into the air
and saw that without a thought
I had smashed the bones
of the empty sky
