Prepare to be enchanted once again as Titoudao, the iconic Singaporean production, graces the stage of the Victoria Theatre this July, celebrating its remarkable 30th anniversary. Under the direction of acclaimed playwright and director Goh Boon Teck, Titoudao weaves a captivating narrative inspired by the life of his mother, Mdm. Oon Ah Chiam, a dedicated practitioner of Wayang (Chinese Street Opera) amidst Singapore's evolving landscape.
With a legacy spanning three decades, Titoudao stands as a testament to Singapore's rich cultural heritage, earning its place as the most successful cross-media creation in the nation's performing arts history, boasting seven restagings to date.
This anniversary production promises a fresh interpretation, featuring new staging, costumes, and a talented cast, including musician Zhuang Hai Ning, whose live music adds an extra layer of depth to the performance. Zhuang, hailing from a family of opera musicians, brings a wealth of experience and a deep connection to the musical traditions showcased in Titoudao.
Since its premiere in 1994, Titoudao has garnered international acclaim, with tours to Cairo, Egypt, in 1994, and Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Beijing in 2000. Its impact extends beyond the stage, having been adapted into a 13-episode TV series in 2021, captivating audiences worldwide on streaming platforms like Netflix and HBOGO.
Over the years, Titoudao has received numerous accolades, including Best Original Script, Production Design of the Year, and Play of the Year at the Life! Theatre Awards in 2001, as well as Best Costume Design in 2007.
