Wouldn't it amazing if one could take a few voice lessons and in no time, be able to easily wail on your favorite Barbra Streisand song. Alas, reality hits differently. Here's the deal. Some songs are gonna feel like ambrosia on the throat. Other songs are going to feel like trying to sing with cords of sand paper. Depending on register, approach, vowels, vocal writing, length of phases, key, text etc, songs have their own code to crack. And some of us won't have the combination regardless of work ethic. And that's ok; frustrating perhaps but informative regarding how our voice actually should function.
So I've put together a quick and dirty songlist of tunes that are deceivingly hard to sing. Give them a try. Just do it. I triple dog dare you. How do they feel? Can you sing them standing on your head at any time of day? Or do you need to be wearing the right clothes, have eaten and drank with great discernment prior, and sing said tune at a certain time of day/barometric pressure/pollen count? Vocal writing is its own architecture and within the craft, it holds its own treasure trove a vocal pedagogy Easter eggs.
PS: All is never lost. Sometimes it's a learning curve and a matter of age and tenacity.
