| James Callahan January 24 | Like Washington leading his troops in the frigid days ending 1776, desperate for a victory, combating low morale, sickness, deserters and those damned mercenaries from Germany, knowing that a surprise attack was his only chance because no one - not even the Hessians - believed it was possible to assail in a Yuletide blizzard, on that fateful night he inspired his troops only to lose two-thirds to cowardice over the Delaware's icy waters, and his frostbitten Continental Army overran their hung-over adversaries the next day and our hero won a moral victory… just like that, I have no idea what good it is to try so hard to conquer the elements and the inevitable of my own icy Delaware, feeling like the two-thirds who couldn't cross to Trenton, feeling like not feeling my own toes in the icy walk called life, feeling there is no moral to any victory, feeling like Washington in retreat with a thousand captors to my own Pennsylvania, feeling this is my destiny. | | | | | You can also reply to this email to leave a comment. | | | | |
