THINK TOGETHER.
Have you ever said something that you regretted saying?
READ TOGETHER
John 1:1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
As we approach Christmas (Yay!) we will leave the book of Proverbs and look at some verses from the New Testament that show us how Jesus himself is our wisdom, that he was wise, and that trusting him is the wisest thing we can do.
Our first verse comes from John's gospel. Can you find John's gospel in your Bible? In John 1:1 he calls Jesus the Word. The Word (Jesus) was in the beginning. The Word (Jesus) was with God. The Word (Jesus) was and is God.
God speaks words.
God writes words.
God IS his word.
That's a pretty big idea isn't it. When you talk you use words. When you write you use words. But you probably wouldn't say that your words ARE you. In fact, like all of us, you have probably used words that you regret and wish you had never said. You would never want anyone to call those bad words you. I know I wouldn't.
But God has never said or written anything that he regretted. He's never misspoken. He's never said anything foolish or silly. All of his words come from who he is and all of his words point to Jesus, the living, breathing Word.
What does this mean? It means that everything in the Bible, every proverb, points to Jesus. And it means that when Jesus was born in a manger at Christmastime, that God's wisdom came to us as a person, not just a proverb. To be wise, we don't just need the proverbs, we need the person, Jesus, living in our hearts. To be wise we must trust God's words and his Word, Jesus.
Because of Jesus we can have all of God's wisdom.
With Jesus we can be truly wise.
DO SOMETHING TOGETHER
Make John 1:1 a family memory verse for the month of December.
PRAY TOGETHER
Jesus, teach me how to see you in all of God's words. And teach me how to trust God's words by trusting you. Amen.
