Did you know that Martin Luther is associated with several of the Christmas traditions we still practice today?
First of all, the Christmas tree is said to have been originated with Luther. While walking through the woods, he was so moved by the brilliant stars and the beautiful scene that he wished to take it with him. So, he cut down a tree, brought it inside and decorated it with candles.
He (or at least the early protestants) are also credited with moving the day gifts were given from December 6th (St. Nicholas' Day) to December 24th. Because the reformers disliked the veneration of saints, they felt gifts should be given to honor the true gift and giver -- the Christ Child.
We also know that Martin Luther loved singing and composed many hymns. One his hymns still used during the Christmas season is the carol, "From Heaven above to earth I come, To bear good news to every home." Listen and give thanks for the One who came to save us.
