MY OCTOBER 2023 INTERVIEW WITH DYSPLACER:
1. How long did it take you guys to write the songs that make up Temple Heights?
Grandmaster Bush of The Southern Temple: It took us about a year or so to write all 9 songs, then about another year to record them. We spent a lot of time for production value with our producer zane knight. Making sure we put everything we could into the album to make it electric!
Northern Sage of The Rising Moon: We actually finished writing halls of justice AFTER the instruments were recorded. This actually caused some issues with our vocalist, the red lotus when he went to put the lyrics to it. But we managed to pull it off and now it's one of the best songs on the album in my opinion.
Red Lotus Of The Sacred Garden: Yup, it was a race against time to get Halls of Justice finished!
2. What first inspired the ninja storyline at the forefront of the band?
Red Lotus of The Sacred Garden: Inside of us is a whole universe of epic tales waiting to be released. Our saga is one I'm sure will resonate with listeners, even if you haven't stopped an evil samurai with the Lightning Fury Fist. Training hard, working towards the hopes and dreams of yourself and others, protecting those close to you, cutting back and letting loose and letting out your frustrations with a roundhouse kick --These range of emotions we have experienced have been forged into our music and I think that makes it more relatable than at first glance.
3. Walk us through the recording process for the album. What challenges did you face? What went well?
Grandmaster Bush: Some of the challenges we faced while recording the album was working with a producer for the first time, and it being our first time ever recording an album. We wanted to drain our souls into it, and I think we did just that!
White Panther of the 12th Chamber: We had to re write a couple things cause the scratch didn't line up with the drums. Or better yet we just completely forgot about a part and voila we have a live only section
4. Did anything change or was anything written in the studio as opposed to in prepro?
Grandmaster Bush: I put a lot more into our studio recording, than what we had originally written. Loads of more harmonies, and little flavor bits here and there!
Northern Sage: So actually, the chorus in Dyspläcer VS dyspläcer drum beat was Zane's idea! I had a normal beat that kinda sounded like the verse beat, and he had an idea to change it up a bit. I couldn't be more happy with it either! Also, originally, for Bloodsport, I had done triplets on the double bass for the chorus, but Zane had mattered it as straight 16th notes and it sounds so much more aggressive and speed metal!
5. What can you say about the sound engineer you worked with?
Red Lotus: I personally got to record my vocals at me bruvs studio, Sanctuary Studios, and that was preem. Working with Zane Knight on the vocal recording process was phenomenal. I would tell him where I was thinking of putting a harmony and he would have one figured out in five seconds. We were working in tandem like a well-oiled metal machine to craft these harmonies, which we would have all written and recordings done in a few hours. Would love to work with Sentinel Knight, Spirit of the Gates again.
Grandmaster Bush: Zane knight is truly a gentleman on patience, and persistence. Always kept it professional, he was always on time and prepared, and he worked very diligently! We wouldn't want to work with anyone else of the second album!
White Panther: The most patient man I've ever worked with and he's fun to work with. It would be 2am and he would send us a copy of our song he's working on. But to prevent the surprise of the final product he would do something stupid like replace the snare with a duck quack sample
6. Talk about the albums that you feel inspired Temple Heights the most.
Northern Sage: Riot city, burn the night. That album rips so hard I can't believe it. That and probably paid in full by skull fist. That album is amazing and it's even cooler that they released it by themselves! Truly shows that a band can absolutely release their own music without any help from a label or anyone!
7. What did you learn while making this album that you think you'll apply to the next record?
White Panther: Finish writing the songs before we put them out would be a good start, that was an ungodly amount of stress for a mere paragraph of words.
Red Lotus: Heh... This is very true. However those that have heard us play the new song off the next album, might be surprised by a few changes that could come later on. Been meaning to get around to finishing that third verse...
8. What are your personal favorite songs on the album?
Grandmaster Bush: Dyspläcer vs Dyspläcer or Halls of justice. Both of these songs are masterpieces in my eyes and our strongest on the album.
White Panther: Bloodsport and Dyspläcer vs Dyspläcer are my all time favorites. They are mean and go fast which is all I ever need. We're going to step on the gas for the next album
Red Lotus: Yeah, it's unanimous, Dyspläcer vs Dyspläcer is our favorite.
9. Do you guys have any plans for future live-action/performance music videos?
Grandmaster Bush:Just you wait and see!!
10. Who created the album art and what's the story behind it?
Our beautiful drummer Zack Healt made this lovely piece, and almost all of our art work!! Gotta love this guy for his creative style and unique composition of this album!!
