Our Sunday School class has been doing a study on perseverance, and this book I picked up at the public library certainly fits in with theme! After his wife died, Paul Stutzman found that time in nature seemed to soothe his grief. He feels called by God to quit his job and hike the Appalachian Trail. Although his trek is difficult and full of many challenges, it is also very rewarding. He processes his grief, grows closer to God, and meets many people who become his new community. At one point he says:
"When I started my AT hike and planned to write a book about the experience, that was all I intended to write: the walk, the adventure, a few observations about life. I never had any intention of writing a 'spiritual' book ....I tell you this--dialogue with God is available to you, to anyone. And furthermore, God actually desires conversation with us."
This book was interesting, funny (at times), touching (at other times) and inspiring. It was a joy to read -- once you start, you won't want to stop.
VERDICT: 5 STARS. I loved it!
