People are like stained glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.

A few photos of pasta and glass
From the gallery of photos above, you may have guessed where I spent a few days recently. Hearing that my sister had never been to Venice, I sought to rectify that and we spent four days there in October. It is the most amazing city and though crowded in places, if you get away from the main drag, you can soon find yourself in quiet backwaters. We were just constantly surprised by the beauty of the buildings, particularly when they are reflected in the water of the canals. My sister commented on the fact that there are no wheeled vehicles, obviously no cars but also no bicycles, or the scooters that we are plagued with these days. I am lucky enough to have been to Venice three times before, the last visit was however fifteen years ago. I was astounded how much I could remember, even down to the little restaurant on the canal side where we had a superb pasta lunch. It was lovely to find that it had changed very little. We did enjoy the fresh seafood and the beautifully made pasta! Many of the shops sell glass made on the nearby island of Murano, I particularly liked the ink pens with their extremely delicate nibs, along with a variety of ink pigments to go with them.
The glorious ceiling in St Marks Cathedral and our lovely little restaurant.
While there is much to see outside, we did spend some time in St Mark's one morning as the decoration is just so incredible. I was lucky enough to sing there with the school choir on my last visit and without exception the pupils commented on how fortunate they felt to be able to perform there, a real highlight for all of them. We also visited the Peggy Guggenheim museum where I photographed the little blue glass fawn. Being able to be so close to works by the best modern painters was incredible, Salvador Dali, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol and many others are represented and the artists enjoyed her patronage as well as her hospitality in her amazing house which fronts on to the Grand Canal. It was a great trip and we were sad to leave!
