TLIC FAMILY. PROVERBS. OCTOBER 30: REFLECTS.

THINK TOGETHER.

Have you ever seen The Lion King? What's your favorite part?

READ TOGETHER

Proverbs 27:19. As in water face reflects face, so the heart of man reflects the man.

Do you remember the movie The Lion King? It's one of my favorites. There's a scene in the movie where Simba the lion is taken to a stream of water by Rafiki the baboon. Rafiki told Simba that he was going to show him Mufasa his father who had sadly died earlier in the movie. When Simba gets to the stream he looks down into the water and is disappointed to see only his reflection. But then the reflection changes and he sees his father, Mufasa. Rafiki says, "He lives in you."

That scene in The Lion King is saying the same thing that as today's proverb. The water reflected Simba's face, but what Rafiki really wanted him to see was his own heart, the heart of Mufasa that was inside of him.

Remember, when the Bible talks about our heart it is not talking about the muscle in our chest that pumps our blood. In the Bible, your heart is that deep inside part of you that controls you. It is your deepest desires, thoughts, and feelings.

Rafiki wanted Simba to know that deep inside of him, past his fears, and his guilt, and his sadness there was the heart of Mufasa the king. Being a Christian is a lot like being Simba. When we receive Jesus as our savior he comes to live in our hearts. In fact, he gives us a new heart with all of his own deepest desires, thoughts, and loves. Just like Simba had Mufasa in him, we have Jesus is us. That's why the proverb says that our heart reflects the man. Or, our heart reflects who we truly are.

Do you have Jesus living in your heart? If you do (and I hope you do) then deeper than your fear is his courage. Deeper than your sadness is his joy. Deeper than any guilt is his forgiveness and cleansing from sin. Sometimes like Simba we need a Rafiki to show us the heart of Jesus that is inside of us. Sometimes we have to keep looking until we see it.

Because of Jesus we have a brand new heart. His heart!

With Jesus we can live from the heart of Jesus.

DO SOMETHING TOGETHER

Watch the reflection scene from the Lion King together (it's on YouTube). Talk about how Simba's heart reflected Mufasa, and our hearts reflect Jesus.

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, thank you for giving me your heart. Help me to trust it more. Amen.
