My weekday Bible study is currently reading through the book of Hebrews. This book contains quite a bit of theology, much of it concerned with Christology -- the nature and role of Christ. Aside from the gospels, no other book in the Bible has a stronger focus on the person and redemptive action of Jesus.
In chapter 3, the author (unknown) describes the work of Christ as a new Exodus. Just as Moses led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, Jesus leads Christians out of slavery to sin. In this way, the Old Testament foreshadows what is to come. Good theology teaches that the Old and New Testaments are all of a piece, and everything points to Jesus! In Exodus we get a glimpse of God's plan, which is fully revealed and fulfilled in Christ.
"Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God's house as a son. And we are God's house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope." Hebrews 3:5-6
The same chapter warns Christians against behaving like the Israelites by hardening their hearts in rebellion against God This reveals a lack of faith. Those without faith will suffer the wrath of God and be unable to experience His peace. How do we avoid this?
"...encourage one another daily ..." Hebrews 3:13
As believers we accept that God is in charge, and we aren't. We can rest in Him.
